Here’s a free alternative to Ecamm’s iPhoneDrive; the shareware app permitting read/write access to a mounted iPhone volume under Mac OS X.
Allen Porter’s iPhoneDisk uses the MacFUSE filesystem for reading & writing data on your iPhone. Install MacFUSE prior to compiling/using iPhoneDisk; click here.
The download below is revision 10 from the project’s subversion repository.
In the event you need to recompile the iphonedisk binary, run ‘make’ from the terminal. I’ve successfully compiled it on my Intel MacBook Pro.
NOTE: There are currently some bugs in the filesystem plugin that make it not cooperate well when copying files using the Finder interface. Stick to the command prompt for now.
See README for other important details.

After countless hours of fiddling with the iPhone, I’ve finally put it aside and we are now launching the latest addition to the Dashhacks Network — iphone-hacks.com.
First and foremost, as of the current moment, there is no method to unlock the SIM/GSM/EDGE side of things… This means you CANNOT use another carrier for phone service, i.e.) Rogers, T-Mobile, etc… Only AT&T; the official authorized carrier of the Apple iPhone. Up to this point hackers have successfully unlocked WiFi & iPod capabilities without activating through the carrier — check our downloads area for those tools.
Now, rest assure, talented and skilled hackers across the globe are working hard to fully open this device up. Astonishing breakthroughs have already occurred: as I mentioned above, bypassing AT&T activation, the filesystem has been fully hacked (full read/write access, escaping the chroot’d environment), and tremendous progress has been made with regard to the ARM Mach-O toolchain. To contribute to the cause, you can join #iphone @ irc.osx86.hu.
Furthermore, resident blogger Oliver has begun… Below you’ll find blog posts concerning the latest iPhone hacks, advancements, and discoveries. While all that is covered here, if you’re interested in more general news surrounding the iPhone, check out iphone.web.net.
Stay tuned! Site updates & hacks are coming!

Hackintosh reports that hackers have gained shell access to the iPhone. For you non-techie readers, this means that we may soon see some true "home brew": applications that run on an iPhone, that are not authorized by Apple (anything locked down from third-party development is a target for hackers–like DVD copy protection, and the Sony Playstation Portable. See for example the thriving PSP hackers community).
The best thing about the iPhone in my opinion is that its a phone with a music player and whats great is that the music player is the best iPod Apple has ever made. So I am not sure how many of you out there are going to be excited to hear that DVD Jon has hacked the iPhone activation such that you can activate the iPhone without ATT. More details available after the jump….
