Update: As we lean towards 1.00 final, RC2.1 comes along…
Beep, beep. nervegas’ iPhone NES emulator has just made its way to version 1.00 RC1. Immediately after updating via Nullriver’s Installer, I noticed “on-demand” audio support — no longer is it necessary to use some troublesome method of killing the iPhone’s media server daemon (mediaserverd). Any average Joe who owns an iPhone can now enjoy the delightful crisp sounds of raw NES’ing.

Comments (0)bitSplit has released a much improved version of his iPhone Mac OS X utility, titled iFuntastic. Carry out any iPhone hack, customization, or mod with tremendous ease. A mouse click here, a drag and drop there, you got yourself a completely customized iPhone.
What’s the diff?
Funtastically delicious!

Comments (0)Some may already know about this, some may not… But for those who with me, iRCm is Pogi’s iPhone IRC client, and a mighty fine one if I don’t say. Again I spotted it through Nullriver’s Installer app — the holy grail of iPhone homebrew. If you’re non-believer, download from us, iPhone Hacks. Seeing is believing. :)

Comments (0)The iPhone has been unlocked several different ways now, and after much teasing from fellow admin Greg I made the drive to Walden Galleria in Buffalo to pickup my very own Apple iPhone. Obviously the first thing I tried when I got it home was using DVD Jon’s iPhone activation server. Much to my dismay I had updated my iTunes and was running v7.3.2.6 the offsets used in the hack require v7.3.0.54. So after doing much hunting around I managed to get a copy of v.7.3.0.54, downgrade iTunes and finally implement the hack using The iPhone Unlocking Toolkit from pqdvd.net.
After activating the iPhone I created an iPhone activation tutorial for windows users documenting my hurdles.
Required software for this guide:
iPhone Unlocking Toolkit
iTunes v7.3.0.54
Those eager to unlock their precious little iPhone may wanna take a stab at trying this on for size… It’s simple and very cheap — don’t get me wrong — you still require some technical ninja-like skills and whatnot; however, there is absolutely no soldering required!

Your iPhone must be jail broken with a functional SSH installation prior to dismantling the device. That’s easily achieved using Nullriver’s AppTapp GUI Installer (for Mac) or Nate True’s SSH kit (for Windows). The remaining requirements: 2 needles — yes, 2 needles, and patience.
The complete guide, courtesy of HaRRo (nice job, by the way), can be read here.

I’m sure many of these will spring up over time; however, here is the first IM client native to Apple’s iPhone — ApolloIM.
Currently in the very early beta stages, ApolloIM only supports the AIM protocol. It’s built on an old, unmaintained library called libFiretalk. The future, according to project author, Arminius2, is to bring an Adium-type universal IM client to the iPhone. I’ll be looking forward to that.
If you’re reading this while thinking, “hey, I know Objective C & UIKit. I’m also vastly familiar with libPurple.” Then I suggest following the source link to lend a helping hand.
Keep refreshing both this site and your Installer.app instance for updates!
I should mention, if you’re using Nullriver’s Installer, ApolloIM is already available via the community sources. That’s where I spotted it. Otherwise, feel free to download from iPhone hacks below.

Comments (0)The Nullriver folk continue to simplify things even further. Previously their command line tool for Mac users was the ideal route for quickly hacking apart your iPhone. Although, you did require the least bit of command line experience in order to do so; which for some, may have been too much. Don’t stress — it’s incredibly simple now with Nullriver’s AppTapp GUI installer. In actuality, I don’t think it can get any easier.

Download, extract, double click “AppTapp Installer.app” and follow the on-screen instructions. Once completed, fire up Installer on the iPhone.
I recommend installing the “Community Sources.” Afterwards you’ll see all sorts of iPhone homebrew goodies to install — OpenSSH, BitchX, the NES emulator, the whole ported BSD subsystem, MobileTerminal, a collection of iPhone homebrew games, etc… I could go on for awhile…
Just download it, and the rest is history. Windows users, for a slightly different alternative, see here.
Thanks for the news tip, Leif.

Comments (1)I’ve come across many reports on various forums with users experiencing difficulty while interacting with the Turbo SIM using turbo-info and/or turbo-app. That said, iZsh has released turbo-smsreset. By the way, this software is only of use if you’re using the Turbo SIM unlock method for the iPhone.
It seems there is a bug which prevents the Turbo Sim from being properly programmed when the SMS storage is full (why the turbo sim is full is another question).
This utility deletes the SMSs from the Turbo Sim, and this should, hopefully, solve the ERRORs while running turbo-info/turbo-app.
To use: disable CommCenter, on the iPhone run:
# launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
Lets assume you’ve already copied turbo-smsreset to your iPhone with proper execution privileges, so run it:
# turbo-iphone-smsreset
Proceed with running turbo-info or turbo-app, and it should hopefully work with no errors.
Then re-enable CommCenter:
# launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
Note: it’s not necessary to reboot the iPhone.
I hope this helps some iPhone hackers out there.

Comments (1)Update: Apparently AT&T lawyers have put a stop to their plan. *sniff* *sniff* I smell bullshit. Rest assure, a software unlock is just around the corner. Whether or not it’s these guys, someone is going to make it happen.
…John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, said his Belfast, U.K., company will be posting software on Saturday that iPhone users can download to unlock their handsets to work with any SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card on any network they choose. The software should hit the Web at www.iphoneunlocking.com between noon and 2 p.m. Eastern Time, he said.
The software is tagged with the price of somewhere between $25 to $50 (USD). I guess that is yet to be decided… Although, users who have already signed up with iphoneunlocking.com will receive a 25 or 50 percent discount. Not bad — cheaper than a Turbo SIM.
Can you feel the excitement?! Keep your eyes peeled and your pants on. See you tomorrow!

Comments (3)I received an email from these guys (iphonesimfree.com) a few days ago, claiming they’ve achieved a complete software-based solution to unlock the iPhone. At first glance I figured a hoax, wouldn’t you? Well, a few days after the fact, Engadget now has a review of their product, and boy was I wrong — it’s legit! Rightfully so, these guys are charging a [unknown] fee for their iPhone unlocking software. Individual per unit licenses will be available starting next week.
Furthermore, this method is said to be “restore/upgrade resistant.” Of course Apple could potentially disable the SIM unlock with future iPhone software updates, but who knows for certain…
Anyway, my apologies for doubting these guys. Amazing work, truly. Now as I continue sendin’ SMS and makin’ calls from my Turbo-SIM unlocked iPhone, the rest of you will have to wait a bit longer. Sorry, had to brag a bit. ;)
