Squidge — Two-way iPhone Video Conferencing *Updated*

Posted by greg

Update: The sample app is now available! Download it below.

  1. You will need a buddy with an iPhone and Squidge installed.
  2. Call your buddy and put them on speaker phone.
  3. Ensure that you have a Wi-Fi connection, and then launch the Squidge application.
  4. You will be presented with your contact list. Select your buddy’s iPhone from the contact list.
  5. That’s it! You are now sending video to our server. Any imagery that your buddy sends to the server should now be displayed on your iPhone.

“A periscope mirror that reflects your iPhone camera image 180°” is recommended. Have fun!

Without a doubt one of the most ingenious iPhone hacks to date… Check out what these clever lads have managed to pull off; it’s MacGyver-type shit. Two iPhones, an intermediate web server to relay compressed video, this yet to be released app, and the Phuckleberry stand (don’t ask, just watch the video) will result in two-way video conferencing. I knew Demolition Man was real!

Sample app on the way…

Next on our list, we’ll be creating an app that will actually let ambitious iPhone users try out the proof of concept. This primarily involves adding a user interface. Check back for this.

Simply awesome. The preliminary hacked together source is available on their blog, I suggest you read the notes concerning that.

And congratulations on conquering Iron Coder live!

I know the iPhone is already hacked and all but this may come in useful at some point anyway. I went to this site and my iPhone froze completely. It wont even shut down. No matter what I do its stuck. I’m afraid to take it to Apple because I dont want the new firmware. If anyone knows any secret shut down methods please post here. My current plan is to just wait till the battery runs out and restart but if it progressively heats up along the way that could become a problem. If anyone wants to risk ruining their iPhone to explore this crash, check it out below.

*whew* recovery method worked (hold down sleep and home buttons for 25 seconds. for me it seemed like it took less time than that actually)

uhh, if you’re sending video over an intermediate server, doesn’t that mean the ppl running the server can view your video whenever they feel like it…?

One of the best ways to take advantage of video conferencing is to have the right equipment. Before getting started with a video meeting, it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the components that you’ll need.
