The Nullriver folk continue to simplify things even further. Previously their command line tool for Mac users was the ideal route for quickly hacking apart your iPhone. Although, you did require the least bit of command line experience in order to do so; which for some, may have been too much. Don’t stress — it’s incredibly simple now with Nullriver’s AppTapp GUI installer. In actuality, I don’t think it can get any easier.

Download, extract, double click “AppTapp Installer.app” and follow the on-screen instructions. Once completed, fire up Installer on the iPhone.
I recommend installing the “Community Sources.” Afterwards you’ll see all sorts of iPhone homebrew goodies to install — OpenSSH, BitchX, the NES emulator, the whole ported BSD subsystem, MobileTerminal, a collection of iPhone homebrew games, etc… I could go on for awhile…
Just download it, and the rest is history. Windows users, for a slightly different alternative, see here.
Thanks for the news tip, Leif.
