iPhone VNC Client/Viewer — VNsea

Posted by greg

Chris Reed has released “VNsea” — a VNC client / viewer native to the iPhone. It is based on Chicken of the VNC for Mac OS X. VNsea 0.2 was released today, and surprisingly — considering its version number — it works damn well. You’re likely to experience some odd behaviour, but that’s to be expected in its early state.

Pay close attention to the project’s home page for future updates. Or, better yet, app tap and refresh the Installer.

For the VNC server, I recommend using Vine for Mac or TightVNC for Windows / Linux. I just finished using Vine — it seems to be a suitable server. Remember to open the appropriate ports (tcp/udp: 5900-5902) on your firewall.

Wait, what’s VNC? In case you don’t know, VNC stands for “Virtual Network Computing” — it permits remote management of a computer running the VNC server. It relays keyboard and mouse events from the client (iPhone) to server (PC), and the server returns graphical screen updates. Get it? You can do this from your iPhone now!

One finger to control mouse navigation; two fingers to move the screen. My wish: horizontal orientation mode. :)
