ScummVM Ported to the iPhone/iTouch!

Posted by greg

Leisure Suit Larry One of my personal favourites… It’s on my PSP, and as soon as I finish writing this, my iPhone.

Thanks to Vinterstum — the one responsible for this particular ScummVM port — we can now enjoy countless classic point-and-click adventure games on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Namely Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Zak McKracken, Monkey Island, Broken Sword 1 & 2, and so many more… That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You need the original disks to run the desired game(s). These are not provided. Vinterstum mentions, “a number of games are still on sale, and for games not in the list go to eBay, into your attic or sometimes they’re still in local bargain bins.”

To ensure you’re always up-to-date with the latest version, follow these installation instructions:

  • Open Installer.app on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch. Use Google to find out how to jailbreak your specific version of the firmware on your device.
  • Tap the “Sources” button in the bottom-right corner.
  • Tap the “Edit” button in the top-right corner.
  • Tap the “Add” button in the top-left corner.
  • Enter http://urbanfanatics.com/scummvm.xml into the text area and tap “OK”.
  • Installer will refresh your sources. It may close. If so, reopen it.
  • ScummVM is now available for install in the Games section.

To learn more about the project, visit ScummVM.org.

iDemocracy 2.0 Released

Posted by greg

The Windows iPhone app that does it all — jailbreak, install Installer.app (for 3rd party apps/games) & custom ringtones, SIM unlock, and “all kinds of other wonderful things” — has been bumped to version 2.0. Being a Mac user I cannot confirm its usability, as of the currrent moment; however, it may run fine under Parallels. I’ll provide an update on that momentarily.

Everything of utmost importance can be found on the Google Code project page. Visit the source link before doing anything, I cannot stress that enough.

iDemocracy Screenshot

Most importantly, iDemocracy now supports iPhone system software 1.1.2! Details on that are bolded below.

iDemocracy is the very first iPhone 1.1.1 jailbreak and third-party app installation solution for the Windows platform, written by Drakenza which is (at least partially) automated, and has a GUI interface. It is currently supported on Windows XP/Vista and requires only iTunes, an iPhone, and the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.

iDemocracy 2 brings all kinds of new features like free ringtones on firmwares 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, as well as File Browsing (using Manzana) and all kinds of other wonderful things.

iDemocracy NOW SUPPORTS FW 1.1.2. However, it cannot unlock OTB 1.1.2 iPhones running bootloader 4.06 (yet). There will be a release 2.1 shortly after the release on the 16th which will add this functionality as soon as possible.

iPhone App Updates — iRadio, gpSPhone, and anySIM!

Posted by greg

Courtesy of Conceited Software is iRadio — an experimental Internet radio tuner with 3D sound features. Currently iRadio only supports MPEG streams. Download, install, and launch. A serious number of streams from various genres will be loaded.

Also a new version of gpSPhone is out — v0.0.7. It’s the Gameboy Advance emulator from developer ZodTTD. Read more about gpSPhone here.

Again, I recommend using Installer.app to ensure you always have the latest versions of each. The exception is anySIM — iPhone Dev Team’s free SIM unlocking solution. It’s not available via Installer, at least not from any reputable sources. Not that I’m aware of anyway. So grab anySIM from us.

Enjoy!

Gameboy Advance Emulator (gpSPhone) for iPhone/iTouch Released!

Posted by greg

Transform the wondrous iPhone (or iPod Touch) into a Gameboy Advance! Introducing gpSPhone — a GBA emulator based on Expohase’s gpSP port.

Developer ZodTTD first ported gpSP to GP2X and has now added iPhone/iTouch compatibility. Utilizing the dynarec engine, full speed performance of the GBA can be achieved on both Apple devices.

You will need to obtain a copy of the GBA BIOS (gba_bios.bin) and place that under /Applications/gpSPhone.app/. Due to legality reasons we won’t be supplying that.

Things that still need work:

  • Compatibility is lower than usual but many games are playable. This is being worked on as a high priority.
  • Sound output is disabled, but it IS being emulated. So performance will only get better as this feature gets worked on.
  • Auto frameskip might be off. Switch to manual frameskip if needed.
  • GUI and instructions need a lot of work.

gpSPhone is available via Installer.app; I recommend going that installation route. You may also download and install the emulator manually. We’re currently hosting v0.0.4. The manual method isn’t advised as many updates are likely ahead.

Enjoy!

iPhone 1.1.2 Jailbreak GUI Released

Posted by greg

Here we have it — the missing piece of the iPhone 1.1.2 puzzle. The iPhone/iTouch Dev Team have shared their jailbreaking GUI for both Windows and Mac. I highly encourage you read “README.txt” before proceeding. Thanks to the many talented iPhone hackers and their devotion we can now downgrade, jailbreak, and unlock 1.1.2.

This software grabs the necessary data off your iTouch/iPhone, upgrades it with the Jailbreak method in place, and finishes with installing Installer.app & SSH.app. It’s reported the entire procedure takes ~ 10 mins. Afterwards you’ll be left with a fully jailbroken iPhone sitting on version 1.1.2.

Once you’re happily upgraded, go ahead with anySIM — the free software unlocking solution.

anySIM 1.2.1u Released — Unlock 1.1.2 / 4.02.13_G

Posted by greg

The iPhone Elite Dev Team has released anySIM v1.2.1u. If you have the technical-savvy skills to downgrade, prepare the jailbreak, and everything else involved with the process of bringing your hacked iPhone up to date — then have at’er.

anySIM 1.2.1u Precautions:

  1. This version works only with 4.02.13_G baseband version and can be run on 1.0.2, 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 jailbroken systems.
    • The only way your baseband will be 4.02.13_G while you’re running 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 is if you updated then downgraded firmware.
  2. If your iPhone came with 4.02.13_G (aka 1.1.2) OUT OF THE BOX then do NOT use this unlock yet.
    • It hasn’t been tested with bootloaders other than BOOT03.09_M3S2
    • Some very new U.K. iPhones come out of the box with BOOT04.06_M3S2.
    • If you’re in doubt, check the output of bbupdater -v or go into minicom and issue at+xgendata

So with that in mind, use this software at your own risk. Good luck!

Simple iPhone Downgrade Instructions

Posted by greg

Need to downgrade your iPhone for whatever reason? Perhaps in preparation for a 1.1.2 jailbreak or SIM unlock. Here is a simple howto:

  1. Enter DFU mode: power + home for 10 seconds, then home for another 10 seconds. The phone will remain completely back. If not, repeat. iNdependence will also do this step.
  2. Select the desired firmware you’re downgrading to; those can be obtained below.
  3. In iTunes hold Option/ALT (on a Mac) or Shift (on Windows) and click “Restore.” Select the ipsw you downloaded.
  4. At the end of the process you will receive an error; this is normal.
  5. Get IPHUC below and issue the following commands:
    • cmd setenv auto-boot true
    • cmd saveenv
    • cmd fsboot

Congratulations — you just downgraded!

iPhone 1.1.2 Jailbroken!

Posted by greg

iPhone 1.1.2 is in fact jailbroken! Following the earlier day fashions of jailbreaking 1.1.1 is the familiar & tedious method used to jailbreak 1.1.2. The key: preparing the device before hand. So you may need to downgrade if you’ve already updated to the latest version. Erica over at TUAW (see source link) has put said method to the test while detailing the entire procedure.

Also noted:

…The general purpose post-upgrade tool has not been generally released. If you oktoprepped and upgraded you are fine–the tool will follow soon–but you really don’t want to do that until the tool gets released.

It’s a safe bet we’ll soon see [multiple] one-click app(s) that take care of the necessary preparation. Sit tight, be patient — 1.1.2 ain’t all that anyway.
