Saurik the creator of Cydia which appears to be the new defacto standard for installing 3rd party homebrew apps on your jailbroken iPhone, has released ‘Cycorder’ a free iPhone video recorder App, opting to use on-screen text ads rather than charging users. It’s a great alternative to the buggy ‘iPhone Video Recorder’ App which requires you pay after you’ve recorded 30 videos limited to 30 seconds each. The previously reviewed Qik will capture audio & video for free but requires you to be connected to a WiFi connection to steam the video to their service.

Cycorder can be installed via Cydia in the ‘Multimedia’ section.

Cycorder offers 6 – 15 frames per second depending on lighting and movement using MJPEG compression at 384×288 (4×3) screen resolution. This gives Cycorder an edge when it comes to video quality by sacrificing the small file size offered by the competition. You can watch videos on the iPhone itself or to really see the quality of the video you can download them to your computer. MOV extension video files can be found in the ‘/private/var/mobile/Media/Videos/’ folder on your iPhone. Unfortunately audio is still in the works and is expected in a future release.

Click the ‘more…’ link to see an example video, the latest in the Alias420’s boring apartment video series.

Saurik seems to be pondering the idea of making audio a feature of a premium version of the program that you would have to pay for instead of continuing the current ad revenue plan. Perhaps some e-mails to saurik @ saurik.com would help convince him otherwise. Let’s hope Saurik doesn’t opt for the headaches of supporting paid users and keeps this free.

No work around I believe, I contacted Saurik and he advised that Erica is releasing a new version of Appflow soon to resolve this issue

The app works great for me. I have snapture and videorecorder also. Cycorder looks better with less features. I can’t wait for the audio to be added. Much props to the creator.

Not bad quiet app, but can the fps be increased to something more respectable like 25-30 in a future update?!

2008-08-28 16:07:41

Sorry, but the iPhone is fundamentally limited to 15fps.

This is just the most cool thing and what a quality, much superior to “the other one”. Make it a 99 cent application and you will be a millionaire in a couple of days after adding sound and sharing. Specially if you sell it through the app store – incredible that no one has got the idea to make a video app, unbelievable.

2008-08-28 21:44:45

You can’t see a video recorder in the App Store. This is the main reason why jailbreaking is interesting: it lets you do things with your phone that Apple will not let you do. I have been waiting for the last two months or so for Apple to tell me that I can’t sell Cycorder in their store (I was fairly certain I wouldn’t be able to) and they won’t even acknowledge the application’s existence ;P. There are a /lot/ of people who don’t get this, though, so I get requests to list Cycorder in the App Store :(.

Thanks for the work Jay. It’s a shame Apple won’t let people take full advantage of the hardware they purchased. None of the so called iPhone killers even come close to being as good as what Apple has given us but it could be so much better if Steve and the gang just let developers do their thing.

I guess this is why the Jailbreak community will always be needed.

Looking forward to audio being added when you can work it out.

Cheers-

The app works great. The video quality is very good. Hope Saurik will add the audio and zoom to the app soon.

For those people want more fps, use DVD recorder not iphone.

C asks “Can we please have it on the app store?”

@C – see Saurik’s earlier response to another person who asked the same question. He’s already applied to have it in the app store.

Apple’s team of marketing technicians are hard at work pretending this app doesn’t exist, and until they change the rules they play by, you won’t see this or any other video recording app in the app store.

@Saurik – I would pay US$5 or $10 for a version of this app without the ads, and I’m sure others would too. I have a Gmail address with the login above, if you offer such a version.

I filmed with cycorder and while filming I got a text-message. Afterwards I get the message “This movie could not be played” when I try to watch it on my iphone. When i want to watch it on my laptop Quicktime also responds with an error saying
” Error -2048:H”.
Is there a solution so I can watch this movie because it’s very important for me?
