These are step by step instructions on how to use WinPwn 2.5 for Microsoft Windows to jailbreak your 2.0 – 2.0.2 second generation iPhone 3G.
REQUIRED:
- iTunes 7.7 installed (make sure to reboot). – Download iTunes
- .NET 2.0 Framework if you are using Windows XP. – Download .NET 2.0
Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage. Download and place in it Winpwn 2.5 (unzip it), bl39.bin , bl46.bin, and the latest 2.0.2 firmware file:
2.0.2 (3G): iPhone1,2_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw
Step Two
Install WinPwn by double clicking the downloaded executable. Once WinPwn has been installed it will put a shortcut icon on your desktop. Double click to launch the application. Make sure you’ve already removed any previous versions of WinPwn.
Step Three
Once WinPwn has opened click on the iPhone 3G to select it.
Step Four
You will then be prompted to select the firmware you wish to use. 2.0.2 is the latest and is recommended at the time of writing this tutorial. Do this then click on the green arrow at the bottom right corner of the window.
Step Five
WinPwn will then prompt whether you are using an official carrier or not. Click the green thumbs up button.
Step Six
WinPwn will then prompt whether you would like to use custom boot/recovery images. Click the green thumbs up button if you would like to use your own images.
Step Seven
You will now be able to select your custom images. Click the iPhone on the left to select your boot logo. Click the iPhone on the right to select your recovery logo.
Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension bellow 320×480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo
Click the green arrow button to continue.
Step Eight
WinPwn will begin searching for your ipsw firmware file. If it cannot find it you will be asked to browse manually. Click the green thumbs up button then navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the ipsw you downloaded in Step One.
Step Nine
WinPwn will now build you your custom ipsw.
Step Ten
Once your custom ipsw has been built WinPwn will ask you if you want to see instructions on putting your iPhone into DFU Mode. Click the green thumbs up button for yes or the red thumbs down button for no.
Step Eleven
WinPwn will then prompt you to connect your iPhone via USB and make sure its turned off. Do this then click the green thumbs up button.
Step Twelve
WinPwn will then prompt its ready to start Pwnage. Click the green OK button.
Step Thirteen
Be ready to follow directions now. It will ask you to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.
Step Fourteen
Once you iPhone is in DFU mode WinPwn will begin the pwnage process.
You will be informed when pwnage is complete.
Notice that your iPhone will display a “Ready to restore Custom IPSW” message.
Step Fifteen
iTunes will now prompt you that you are in recovery mode.
Make sure to Hold down Shift and click the Restore button in iTunes.
A file browsing dialog will appear asking you to select your ipsw firmware file. Select the Custom firmware file created by WinPwn then click the Open button.
NOTE**: WinPwn places the Custom firmware file in the “My Documents” folder by default.
Your iPhone 3G will now be restored to the jailbroken 2.0.2 firmware!
i haave att after i jailbrake my 3g is no network so i not have phone service after the jailbrake i need help

i jail broke it all. After using shift restore and going thorough that process it says “the iphone ‘iphone’ could not be restored” what do i do?
You need to remake the restore file, and select ‘official provider’ at the first screen, or if using advanced, click do not activate.

yesterday but had a few troubles with it. So deleted everthing and completely restored. Gonna work through this now. Seems to be basically the same. Fingers crossed.
For those that care, or those that may be able to help, this is what happened when i tried before.
P.S. Since it didnt work the last time ive upgraded to itunes 8. Hope that doesnt ruin any of this!

I thought i’d try this yday and going through winpwn 2.5 was a breeze. Ive got a 3G 2.0.2 btw. Managed to try out some 3rd party apps (quake, cycorder) and they seemed brilliant.
THEN, after changing my theme through winterboard on the way to work, the screen flashed and i was presented with the boot screen. Problem was, it never left the boot screen!
So all day i was without a phone, till i got home and could restore it.
So restored it last night and used an old backup from before it was jailbroken to get my appstore apps/txts/settings etc back on it.
This morning, went into cydia, downloaded cycorder and started downloading winterboard, when POOF, back to the boot screen.
Just had to restore AGAIN!
Its most annoying because loading the backup takes SO long! and if the crash happens when im at work i lose my phone till im back home.
Im going to try this time not using my old back-up and just going at it from scratch.
Fingers crossed i dont end up having to restore it again within a few hrs!
Can i just double check with u guys all the ways to ‘restart’ an iphone. Just to make sure that if this does happen again there’s def no other way to get it up and running without doing ANOTHER restore.
Hope this doesnt put ppl off doing the jailbreak, just wanted to let ppl know what happened when i tried it and hopefully one of u v clever ppl can tell me what im doing wrong

Hey man, I’m about to attempt this as soon as i download the ipsw. But i have a few things i would like to get cleared before i proceed with the whole thing.
Q1:my iPhone is registered with Rogers wireless, will i still have connectivity from them, by this i mean will it affect my bill or my phone calls?
Q2:I am on A unlimited anywhere data plan which lets me surf the web anywhere regardless of routers, will i still get that after i jailbreak it?

If your iphone only shows emergency calls just PLUG IT INTO ITUNES 7.7 (filehippo.com) and make sure itunes can access the internet to unlock it
my i phone 3g shows emergency call also ,then it shows that connect it to itunes ,
when i connect it , it give alarm that sim card is not supported .
before i update my iphone , it was working .

I got a new iPhone and had it upgraded to 2.0.2 5C1 and did not use the correct firmware package and so my modem firmware version is now 02.08.01 and wanted to find out what the original baseband version was.

I just got an iPhone today. (borrowing from a friend’s). It’s my first time holding it. :(
I run auto-update on iTunes to firmware 2.0.2 but after successfully updated, the phone locks. (The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. etc.. etc..)
I read and will follow the above instruction (currently still downloading the iPhone1,2_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw). But my first concern, will I be able to load up the custom firmware using iTunes?
Secondly, how to differentiate between iPhone generation and 3G ready feature?

i can still call people but thats about it, my simcard is accepted o the phone but i can only use the emergency call
and when i plugg the iphone to the computer itunes says “your simcard is not supported”
can someone explain and if posible help?

I waited for about 30 min, then restarted winpwn and now I’ve been waiting for over an hour. It’s probably frozen, but I don’t want to give up now that I’ve put so much time into it. Someone help us.

I’m trying to jailbreak my iphone 3g, i’ve followed all instructions but when i get to step eight where WinPwn is searching for the custom firmware i get an error just as it begins hashing
The error reads:
Could not load or assembly \’lCSharpCode.SharpZipLib,PublicKeyToken=null’ or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the Application will close.
Then it asks me to click “OK”

Winpwn keeps crashing on me right after my iphone 3g enters dfu mode (step 13). Im using winxp.

It says i’m running software version 2.1
…when running winpwn I keeps selecting firmware vers 2.0.2……could this be the reason winpwn always crashes after my phone enters dfu mode?

Me too. Tried firstly on my Vista laptop then on my XP desktop. Both crash at step 13. ( I notice that there is a lot of activity as the system reports new hardware found as the DFU mode is being set, could it be something to do with that?)

when the phone comes to dfu and winpwn stopped working just leave it the same ( don’t close it ) and open itunes and finish the same what you doing .

guys i tried so many times to jailbreak my 3g 16g iphone by using winpwn 2.5 but it seems that this programme is not responding and hanging then stop working.
the good news that finally i jailbreak it by using winpwn 2.0.0.4
so, i recommend this to u guys. try to use it until the hack group finish winpwn version 3. however, ur iphone software will work with 2.1 still no updating for 2.2.
try it & go through winpwn 2.0.0.4 options if ur iphone has an official carrier so de activite the phone by un mark it then continue the process 4 jailbreak.
have a nice jail breaking and don’t forget to mark both cydia & installer.
every time I get to the part were it notifies me that I have succefully entered DUF mode the program shuts down and asks me if I want to send an error report what does this mean and what should I do ?

the winpwn would always crash so i just restored using the custom ispw and it worked… but how do u get all your contacts and everything back on your phone…. it won’t let me put back on because it says its a different software number.
