The game of cat and mouse between Apple and The iPhone Dev Team continues. If you have tried to use the latest iTunes 8 to unlock or jailbreak your iPhone or iPhone 3G you may have noticed this new error message when attempting to restore:

The iPhone Dev Team has always boasted that the current hacks they use to achieve a jailbreak cannot be solved unless Apple makes a hardware change. This is still true Apple has not closed the hole in the hardware that allows a jailbreak but instead is trying to detect the hack in the ipsw file before it reaches the device.

From the Dev Team:

one way they can try to combat Pwnage for existing hardware is to program iTunes to detect and prevent the Pwnage exploit.  In fact, they’ve already done that in iTunes 8.

If you need to downgrade back to iTunes 7.7.1 to complete a jailbreak or unlock you can find them in our iPhone Downloads section or use these direct links:

Download iTunes 7.7.1 Windows
Download iTunes 7.7.1 Mac OSX

Luckily the Dev Team was already anticipating this move and are prepared. Patches to fix this counter measure are already in the works. In fact the iPhone Dev Team has already claimed a completed patch for iTunes 8 for Mac OSX and have promised patches for other versions soon.

The nice thing about iTunes decisions is that we can provide you with patches to counter them. We have one such patch already for Mac iTunes 8 for iPod touch. We’ll be working out the full suite of patches for all the combinations over the next week.

Here are 2 screenshots that Apple doesn’t want you to see. Notice the Terminal icon at the end of:

Im glad they are working on this. Hopefully we’ll see the 2.1 jailbroken and I will upgrade then move to the jailbroken version.

what about unlocking the iphone 3g. Is there anything in the horizon, or any expectations. Is it really that hard?

Thanks DEv Team great work

The odd thing is: I have windows, I installed iTunes 8 and jailbroke my iPhone 2G with it. Absolutely nothing happened during it’s initial restore or my actual non-jailbreak restore.

I dont think its that hard. I think it may be the phone limiting what they can do. The first version of the iphone wasn’t limited to anything. The 3g may have something that stops the complete jailbroking apps from allow those users from using other providers other than At&t.

I did jailbreak on itunes 8 and 2.0.2 for 3g. Pwnage didn’t make it, but quickpw did.
