Apple has released the 2.1 system software update for the iPhone & iPhone 3G today. If you have a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone we do not recommend updating until software like PwnageTool, QuickPwn & WinPwn have a chance to update for this latest iteration.

Update: Some risk takers have reported it is safe to upgrade to iPhone 2.1, if you have an unlocked first generation iPhone. You will lose your jailbreak but the modem will remain unlocked.

Here’s what’s new:

  • decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
  • significantly improved battery life for most users
  • dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
  • improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
  • faster installation of 3rd party applications
  • fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
  • improved performance in text messaging
  • faster loading and searching of contacts
  • improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
  • option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
  • Genius playlist creation

As always we’ve mirrored these firmware files in our iPhone Downloads section under “iPhone Firmware”::”iPhone System Software Updates” or just use these direct links:

As much as I want this to see if It will make my phone stop dropping calls and respond a little faster, I’m going to wait for a jailbreak to become available…

WTF. nothing, just a buch of stuff that should have already been there! This is really poor, really really poor.

I still cant forward a number or hope for sat-nav. I cant read standard docs or have a simple to-do. Or at the most simplist level cut-N-paste… should I go on about mms etc

Totally agree!!! Nothing I want here … maybe improved battery life and less crashing — IF — it’s real!! The ‘Apple Love/Hate’ continues. Can’t wait for some serious iPhone competition — at which point Apple will be forced to get off their fannies and start giving users what they want and need to handle basic phone/SMS/MMS work.

I think its a very good update! My battery life is greatly increased and I have a much better signal strength! In a area where I get dropped calls, this no longer happens with this 2.1 update! My apps dont seem to crash either. I use Splash Money and so far it has not crashed and is much faster! Everything seems faster now. Good wok Apple!

Can you upgrade an unlocked iPhone with this update (and stay unlocked, like previous updates) If you don’t care about jailbreak?

I did this and it relocked the phone to UK O2. Now my Orange UK SIM says on the phone “You have changed the SIM connect to itunes to activate” and in iTunes it says “You are using a sim from an unsupported carrier” replace sim with the one which came with your phone. Also, the phone is no longer recognised with older versions of iTunes other than 8.0 and the last v.7.
Also, if the computer is not connected to the internet, iTunes does not allow an update even though the updates are downloaded etc… The whole think is crap.

Are you guys serious? Updates are usually bug fixes and improvement on some poor perfomances. You are not getting charged for this upgrade. Why would they want to add more functionality in an already good phone.

From seeing how much improvement this upgrade is, I commend Apple on fixing it. Unlike other companies that just won’t listen to their customers. These are real fixes for better use of the phone so everyone get real.

I have an unlocked 1st ed iPhone and want to upgrade the iPhone to 2.0 or later and install iTunes 8.0. Please advise what version of iPhone is safe to upgrade to and if iTunes 8.0 is safe to upgrade to. I have version iPhone 1.1, i think. I am a newbie, but I am proud to say I unlocked the iPhone early on without bricking it! Thanks for any advice.

I just finished updated my iPhone 3G with 2.1 software. It is 1:10AM PST on 9/19/2008 and this process started at 5:30PM PST on 9/18/2008. So I really hope the faster backups will begin now with the new firmware… 8 hours to backup my phone before the update come on Apple what’s the deal with that. I barely have about 1.5GB of used capacity on this thing….

Time to go test out all the enhanced features…

- Push… definitely works better. Almost as good as it was on my old blackjack

- Contact hangs. I have over 600 contacts and it still take a few seconds to load but much much better i have to admit than before.

Let’s see how the rest goes.

aD.
