Many Microsoft Windows Vista users for both 32 and 64 bit versions have been experiencing problems with Apple’s new iTunes 8. What kind of problems? The worst kind, the infamous windows blue screen of death! In response to this Apple has quietly swapped the Windows version on their servers with a new iTunes 8 download file that should fix these bugs. They have also published a few workarounds that may help those still being affected.
If you were one of those who downloaded iTunes 8 right away and are having problems, try uninstalling it then downloading it again from Apple to reinstall. If that fails to work try these solutions from Apple’s Technical documents:
Solution 1:
* Disconnect your iPhone or iPod from Windows Vista.
* Uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support
* For Classic View
* Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
* First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
* Select iTunes, click Uninstall.
* For Control Panel Home View
* Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
* First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
* Select iTunes and click Uninstall.
* Restart the computer.
* Re-download and install the updated iTunes 8 installer from www.apple.com/itunes/download.Important: Do not use the iTunes8Setup or iTunes864Setup file you previously downloaded. The reason for this note is Apple wants users to download the re-release version of iTunes 8.
Solution 2:
Outdated software drivers on your computer can cause strange behaviors when syncing the computer with your iPhone or iPod touch. While any driver software could be a factor, updating the software drivers for Logitech QuickCam/Webcam products, Lexmark scanners, and some built-in media card reader drivers on the computer may solve this issue in a majority of cases.
Solution 3:
Isolate the issue to see if there is a USB conflict by disconnecting other USB devices connected to the computer such as a printer, digital camera, scanner, etc.
Solution 4:
Try connecting the iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port or connect directly to the PC if using an external USB hub.

Apple have done it again. Fools, haha. Who really wastes their money on Vista? Let alone Apple products!
vista boo! ever see that comercial about windows mohave which is really vista? yeah REAL PEOPLE. REAL DUMB PEOPLE.
I belive they are called “The Vista Mojave Experiment”
Either way, all they did was pick people who didnt know anything about anything. Thats why they were so facinated by windows vista.
Or may you think some vista users have been forced to buy a solution (mostly laptop) with drivers and stuff available only for a “vista like” system?
No eh? just laugh and make fun of everyone else…so childish
Can’t avoid Vista. Ugg. Impossible to get a new PC with anything else. Even if you have an extra copy of XP laying around, getting XP drivers is becoming difficult. Apple may be bad, but so are the rest!!
Vista isn’t as bad as you might think. It’s just like XP was when it came out.
Vista is not the problem. Apple refuses to play well with others. All was fine for us until the iTunes 8 came out and now we get the blue screen of death. If Apple is as amazing as they think they are they should make their products so they can be compatible with all not just ones with apples on them. They are way too exclusive …I wish I could do without but iTunes is quite a resource. PLEASE I hope they fix this issue….I hope they care enough to fix it.
I’ve got a problem, maybe someone here knows the answer. Whenever I play music on iTunes 8, and I put on the new visualizer, after a few minutes, iTunes crashes. Why?
Robert–
I was having the same problem, but I think I’ve narrowed down the cause. Are you trying to use other programs at the same time as iTunes 8 with the visualizer on? Mine runs fine if I don’t have anything else going, but if I watch it for a while and then open up Firefox and IM stuff and things, then it often crashes.
Hey, I’m having a massive problem with my itunes 8. I spend a lot of time organising my music but once i turn off my computer and then turn it back on my itunes resets itself and all of my music disappears and it’s like i only just installed itunes again…can anyone help!!! please
Hi Adam,
Did you ever find the solution to your problem above, with itunes 8 and vista?
I am having exactly the same problem and can’t find any forums dealing with it and it’s driving me MAD! I bought a brand new Vaio laptop with Vista pre-installed. I’ve got itunes 8.1.1 loaded but I keep losing my entire itunes music collection whenever I turn off the laptop!
Any help gratefully received!!
Thanks very much
Hi Dave,
I’m also having the same problem. And its on a brand new Vaio laptop as well. The iTunes library xml file and itl files quietly disappear from the iTunes folder. Did you ever find out what caused this?
