Windows user have spent the last day watching jealously, as Mac users have enjoyed the new versions of QuickPwn and PwnageTool for jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone 2.1. Windows users we have good news and bad news for you so here it goes.
Good News: WinPwn 3.0 is on it’s way and will support iPhone & iPhone 3G 2.1.

Go to sleepers.net and follow the winpwn 2.5 guide. You will have to restore your phone to the 2.0.2 (or less)firmware since winpwn 3.0 isn’t out yet. Once you’ve restored it, download all the necessary things listed in the guide, and follow BigBoss’ steps. It is very detailed and includes screenshots. The troubleshooting section may also help alleviate any problems you encounter while pwning. Hope this helps.

but i have spent 2 months trying to unlock a US import iphone which was bought legitimately from a high street store.
i have tried every permutation and version of ziphone, winpwn, liberty, itunes, and a few more besides.
on the brink of throwing the thing away, i just tried the 2.1restore file above with itunes 7.7 and the phone works perfectly, including the non-contract carrier.
i still don’t have the edge menu, but i have a network settings menu which shows all available carriers.

if your iphone has ver 2.0.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 then you can use winpwn2.5 to unlock it. You have to flash baseband if you don’t get signals after pawn.

no, don’t hit restore or update. but if you are using windows os then hold down shift key then click on restore. Then you can select firmware file. But beware if you upgraded to version 2.1 then winpwn cannot be used to unlocked it, since winpwn v3.0 hasn’t been relised yet. So you have to use other software like quickpwn etc.
That is why he posted a custom 2.1 firmware for Iphone 3g. It was made using Mac software but windows users can use it now.

well if you don’t have iphone account with at&t then don’t upgrade to 2.1 because we all are waiting for winpwn 3.0 which can unlock iphone with v2.1 Meanwhile you can use winpwn 2.5 beta to unlock iphone with ver 2.0.2.

even though its been pawn you can pawn it again, upgrade it to v2.0.2 then use winpwn to pawn it. Then use above 2.1 upgrade.But if you are in us with ATT then don’t upgrade it to 2.1 because you cannot get signals then.

People, read what Alias420 has put: “As long as your iPhone or iPhone 3G has been Pwned previously all you need to do is restore a custom 2.1 firmware via iTunes 8″ So, IF your iPhone has been Pwned in the past, all you have to do is download the Custom IPSW from this website, plug in your iPhone, press Shift and click “Restore” on iTunes, then browse for your IPSW (Save it on Desktop – Default), and let it update for you.
You cannot use this for Non-Pwned phones, at the moment.

Be VERY careful when you’re messing with a very complicated piece of gear. If you do not know what pwned means, you should NOT be performing this. You need to head to google.com and READ, READ READ. There are solid step by step instructions on how to unlock your iphone using the pwn tools.
Best to you, but believe me, the hour or so you invest in learning about this will keep your phone safe and operational through each update as we go forward…

I love you this soo worked I haven’t slept in days trying to do this. It worked in less than 15 mins although the download of the file took forever. I have a 2G iphone that had 2.0.2 on it unlocked with winpwn. Then downloaded the custom file 2G file and just restored with itunes and I now have an unlocked, jailbroken 2G iphone with 2.1 firmware. I hope more people see this it’s ten times easier than the other processes out there :) I’m happy. I can go back to work now lol.

thx for the effort guys. i used your custom ipsw on my unlocked 1g iphone running 2.0.2. All is fine except any apps from the apple store open and then crash. I tried deletion and reinstallation from both itunes or direct on the device to no avail. Thoughts? Keenly look forward to your Winpwn 3.0. many thx. Rob
Download BigBosses Preferences from installer or cydia. besides being able to create custom toggle for apps and functions, it has a user directory fix and a way to kill the apple app kill switch. hope this helps.
The chances are this ipsw will not work for Aussie Optus or Virgin based phones as it seems to be built with the activate setting checked. (Optus and Virgin requires activation via iTunes, I believe AT&T may be the same, possibly Telstra too)

I previously had a 2.0 3G that was pwnd.
Downloaded the restore file, link located in this page.
Just followed the instruction and restored the the downloaded file using itunes 8.
When restoring… Press shift on your keyboard then click restore on itunes, then locate the file you downloaded from this page. In just about ten minutes my Iphone 3g is upgraded to 2.1. Also, I am using unlock 3g sim and it seem to be working great as well.

you are using a 3g unlocked sim? does that mean you have one of those cards piggybacking your sim like turbosim, or does it mean you had 2.0.X and you unlocked the phone, then used this method to keep your phone unlocked, but still upgraded? thanks!

This does not unlock the sim for 3G, no software yet. You need to use unlock sim for that. The one that you stick on your simcard.. you can find lots of it on ebay.
This custom firmaware unlocks iphone software and jailbreak the iphone itself only but not the 3g baseband.
I hope this is clear now for everyone.
I don’t believe this is answered above. Can current ATT activated and jailbroken 3G iphones use this Custom Firmware. I have the file about 1/2 downloaded now and just want to be clear.

Everything worked fine on my iPhone 1G.It’s unlocked, jailbroken and activeted.Easy as pie!:)
Nobody has answered my previous question yet… but after installing this firmware on an activated ATT 3G, I have no service with 3g on or off. the phone booted and everything looked normal, but no service. Also Itunes wanted to restore my previous backup. I let it do it’s thing for 20 minutes or so…and the phone would never boot back up successfully. Just sat at a pineapple and vibrating every 20 – 30 seconds. Itunes would perform the sync…so it was talking with iTunes…just never loaded the icons/springboard.
Going back to 2.0.1 for now
if you don’t have service then you have to use bootneuter to update basebands. If you going back to 2.0.1 , you still won’t get signals.

I used the 2.1 fw on this page and restored in iTunes8 without DFU mode. – just renamed the file from .zip to .ipsw
I couldn’t restore from backup – so i set up as new iphone.

Which file is it that I want to rename to .ipsw. My phone is pre-pwned and I donwloaded the custom 2.1 firmware, but I don’t know which file to rename. I tried the whole folder but to no luck. Download the file, save it to a folder, then change the extention to ipsw. Restore the ipsw file into the iPhone using Itunes.
I tried to restor with the custom restore file given above and i have a pwned 2gen iphone on 2.0.2 firmware made with winpwn 2.5. But when í try to rstore to 2.1, i always get an error message no. 1403. I have tries to restore both in DFU mode and in normal recovery mode, but always i get the same error. What may be the reason for this?

got it all figured out, you have to rename it when downloading it initially
If you have your computer set to “show extensions” then you can simply click on the file and rename it at anytime. If your files do not “show extensions” and you do not understand how to change the name (including the extension) then the easiest thing to do is to rename the .zip file to .ipsw during save.
One thought though: If you are this unfamiliar with basic computer functions it might be wise to not attempt to unlock your iphone without the help of someone with more experience.

Ok Don read the posts above. You CANNOT USE THIS WITH ATT OR ROGERS. IT WILL DEACTIVATE YOUR CELL SERVICE. Wait until a working jailbreak is avaliable for 2.1 (there are ways avaliable now, but they are tricky) or if you must have a jailbroken iphone, then stay with 2.0.2 or 2.0.1 for now. I had a 2.0.2 jailbroken iphone but i’m running 2.1 regular now. I don’t need my iphone jailbroken for a couple days. It won’t kill me :).

Well, I am on Rogers, and was running 2.0.2 with a 2G iPhone.
I downloaded the custom ipsw file (it was downloaded as a zip file, and I just renamed it to .ipsw as instructed above).
Next, I synch’d and made sure that I got a backup of my current phone.
Next, I hit shift-Restore, and selected the ipsw file. I selected the ipsw file just renamed.
The phone chugged away for about 10 minutes downloading the new firmware.
When this was done, iTunes came back and told me that an iPHone had already been sync’d, and did I want to restore the backup file? I said yes, of course. The backup was restored, and everything looks good.
All I had to do was go back and reinstall the Cydia apps, as they were erased during the process.
So, I am up and running on 2.1 on Rogers.

it took about 9088748974838953 tries… a combination of above stated stuff, some curse words, several cigarettes, couple 12s of dr pepper, a seance, and a visit by father karras to exorcise my iphone…

connect you iphone to computer open itunes let it back up so u know u have a recent one and when it done hold shift and click restore on itunes it will then ask for the fw choose the one u downloaded here and then let it work. when its finished if u so choose to (its what i did to make everything easier) choose not to restore back up just yet unplug iphone go to cydia download openssh or what ever one u prefer and locate the mobileinstallation file for 2.1 and install it then when done connect to itunes and restore your back up

ok well to rename file extensions (ie. *.zip to *.ipsw) then do the following (in win XP only, vista sux!):
1. open windows explorer (WINDOWS, NOT internet explorer)
2. goto tools
3. goto folder options
4. click the ‘view’ tab
5. untick the ‘hide extensions for known file types’
now you will see the filename end in the ‘.zip’ then just simply rename it to ‘.ipsw’
done.
tisk tisk switch to firefox or when the save dialog box comes up when it asks u where u wanna save it choose desktop and under filename change zip to ipsw and the save as type to all files

My iPhone is 2G phone updated till 2.0.2 using WinPwn.
I downloaded the 2.1 custom firmware from this site.
Fired iTunes 8 and let it detect my iPhone. Next, did a simple SHIFT-RESTORE and selected the downloaded ipsw file.
The process went on smoothly. The only annoying thing was the startup Apple icon replaced by a Pineapple icon (!! :-()
Now I am on 2.1!!!
Did not notice anything remarkable, but overall stability looks better than 2.0.2.
2.0.2. was probably, the worst version I put on my iPhone!!
Guys .. go ahead with this one … esp people with old iPhone 2G and currently on 2.0.2. Its time to move up one step.

MY EXPERIENCE:
i had a 2G 1.1.4 OTB (unlocked/JB by Ziphone) which i recently upgraded to 2.0.2 (unlocked/JB by WINpwn) and decided to give the 2.1 firmware above a try to see if it would stay unlocked.
RESULT: i now have a 2G unlocked iphone and all i did was download the 2.1 FW above and restore with it using SHIFT+RESTORE

You can’t use boot neuter on v2.1 either according to the boot neuter website.

Thanks the custom firmware worked like a charm but the only problem I am having is trying to restore my backup. I have tried replacing the mobileinstallation file and just tried to restore the backup after I updated to the new firmware but after it finishes the restore and restarts it gets stuck on the starting winpwn logo and the status circle keeps spinning and it vibrates every 30sec when its still plugged into the computer. I need help…..:(
I figured it out I had to delete the apple.springboard.plist and it stopped being stuck on the boot logo and vibrating. It was because I had a theme when i was on 2.0.1 and when I did a restore it tried loading the theme when the file isn’t there.
I have successfully installed the 2.1 firmware on my unlocked iPhone — but now I cannot get in via Transmit or SSH — seems the root password may no longer be ‘alpine’ !
I am trying to upload the necessary files to activate EDGE on T-Mobile.
You need to install openSSH from Cydia. I had the same problem. Good luck!! :)
i have just tried this on my legit 02 (uk) 3g iphone, upgrading from 2.0.2 to 2.1. All worked fine except I now have no signal and in the ‘about’ tab in settings it says (null) (null) under carrier. The phone has not been unlocked, just jailbroken.

I had to PWN my phone using winpwn and v2.01, then restore a custom v2.02 ipsw file and finally restore the custom 3G v2.2 file on this site.

nicodemus3d, had the same problem as you No Service, tried bootneuter but it doesn’t support 3G just resets, tried Quickpwn and Pwnage tool on a Mac but no joy. I have now re-done a 2.0.2 using winpwn and have a signal. Will retry the custom 2.1 later

NO, There is no way to unlock a 3G iphone with software at the moment. The only way to use a third party sim card on the 3G iphone is to use something like turbosim ect.

If I upgrade my 2G iphone unlocked/activated/jailbroken with WinPwn to 2.0.1 with this FW will Cydia still be there or will I have to download after the restore. I supose what I ‘m asking Does this restore leave cydia on the phone or does it delete it.

If your looking to unlock your iphone 2g with the 2.1 firmware well QUick Pwn 2.1 unlocks and jail breaks your phone.. i pwned and im connected with tmobile works perfectly.
I have an unlocked 2g with firmware 2.02 on o2-uk. Just used the above custom file and just restored from itunes. now have unlocked 2.1. All works fine except when I tried to restore from backup it screwed the iphone.

I have a 1st Gen 8Gb iPhone which I had recently WinPwnd(2.5) and upgraded to ver2.0.2. Since the backup/sync times were bugging me too much, I went on and updated my itunes to ver 8.0. Now, I did a shift+restore to upgrade my phone but instead of choosing the custom firmware, I selected the official 2.1 firmware from Apple. This has rendered my iphone locked and unactivated. Itunes tells me that the SIM card is invalid and doesn’t give me any other options. Phone tells me to connect to itunes and activate. Please help !!

Just help me!!! My I-phone was working fine with ver. 1.1.4 then i updated it to 2.0.2 with firmware 5A347 and i could successfully unlock it with winpwn but the problem is my phone is not detecting any service provider….pleas help!!!
instead of waiting for the winpwn I download the latest version of Qucikpwn for windows and it works great. Actually I find it much easier and faster than using winpwn. Regardless both ways jailbreak so kudos to all.
I wanted to thank you for the link and everyones post in the forum!! Previous unlock and jb with winpwn 2.0. accidental deleted file on SCP and this restore with the 2.1 file worked with itunes 8 custom restore in recovery mode. lost all my apps though but t-mobile phone service, itunes, cydia, and installer, everything else works gravy. looking forward to winpwn 3.0 to customize.. THANKS!!!

Saturday, I completed the upgrade of iPhone [not 3G] direct from Version 1.1.4 to 2.1.0, using QuickPwn 2.1, guided by the iClarified Guide released on Friday 19 September 2008

iClarified has provided links to all the required firmware and software.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this forum, it gave me the confidence and wisdom to carefully monitor what was going on [Version 2.0 stability, etc] and patience to wait for Apple’s Version 2.1, QuickPwn, and iClarified, to update to 2.1.
When QuickPwn was done, iTunes 8 Restore worked a treat.
A few observations however…
Version 2.1.0 on an iPhone 2G…
a) SMS Text is slower to open, almost two seconds…
b) Settings takes longer to open, almost two seconds.
c) WiFi at home is significantly slower, on same iPhone,
40 kB/s on Version 2.1.0,
versus 80 to 120 kB/s on Version 1.1.4.
d) EDGE is about the same, 28 kB/s…

Anyone on O2 UK DON’T you ever use it!!! It will jailbreak definitely but NO CARRIER… I tried it… I’m back on 2.0.2 again using iTunes 8 still working. For others who don’t have any MAC Laptop we just need to wait… unless you want to experiment you can try the above…
Just an additional info… that’s for iPhone 3G on O2-UK i don’t know about 2G… it will jailbreak but NO CARRIER…OK. For us in UK I guessed we just need to wait for the winpwn 3 unless you’re using a MAC.
Manny is right. Dont try custom 2.1. on your 3g. My 3g phone dont have any signal …good thing i was able to restore it. Dont waste your time downloading the file.

Acctually using iTunes is the only way (I think) that you can jailbreak a 2.1 version iPhone. You can unlock your phone to use T-Mobile, but you will need a T-Mobile SIM card.
i tired downloading custom pwn 2.1for my 16g 3g from 3 different web site and everytime i unzip the file there nothing there. am i missing a file off my computer or what am i doing wrong. if i upgrade with 2.1 from i tunes can i go back and repwn it again.

I just got a new replacement iphone 2g from apple, i checked it was manufactured in mid August 2008, its not activated and i cannot connect it to itunes! its show you iphone is not activated or put a sim to activate. im using t-mobile, does quickpwn work to unlock and activate? HI! Everybody out there. I just bought an iphone 3G 8GB with AT&T as an upgrade to my current contract. The Iphone comes with software version 2.1. I use QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows to jailbreak my phone and it work successfully, but I have no signal bars. I have no need to unlock it because I use AT&T for my service but I was under the understanding that the jailbreak would activate it as well so that I did not have to pay the data package fees if active it through their 1-800 number. Am I doing something wrong here? remember this is a Iphone 3G with custom firmware 2.1 not 2.2 which I understand changes the baseband. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Just to let you know…
… I had a working iPhone (not 3G) with firmware 2.0.2. After using the “iPhone 2.1 Custom ipsw Download” from this site and iTunes 8.1.1.10 the battery will no longer recharge. I am now trying to see if going to DFU Mode will help me charge it enough so that I can go back to my working 2.0.2.
An update so my battery problem:
After going into DFU mode and rebooting the battery icon on the upper corner was still red. I noticed however that SysInfo said that the battery was “Fully Charged”. It looks like that there was an battery icon problem since suddenly changed to green after a couple of rebooting.
So… I am running the 2.1 firmware found on this site with iTunes 8.1 and no problems.
I got the jailbreak thing but for some reason whenever i try tocrack it it won’t work why is this? Also, I have tried to put my phone on DFU about several times to do it and it still wont work…WHY WHY WHY WHY
