These are step by step instructions on how to use QuickPwn 2.1 for Microsoft Windows to unlock & jailbreak your first generation iPhone 2.1 2G/EDGE.

REQUIRED:

Note: If you have already upgraded your iPhone to firmware 2.1 skip step 2.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage.

Download the following files and place them in this Pwnage folder you just created on your desktop:

Unzip the QuickPwn21-1.zip file inside the Pwnage folder.

Step Two
Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left side navigation bar. Now hold down shift while clicking the Restore button.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and select the 2.1 firmware ipsw file. Double click the ipsw file or select it and click the Open button to proceed.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished upgrading your iPhone to the 2.1 firmware you may launch QuickPwn 2.1 from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop.

Step Four
Make sure you iPhone is still connected to the computer via USB cable then click the blue arrow to proceed.

Step Five
Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone firmware.

Step Six
Select the 2.1 firmware ipsw file from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop then double click the ipsw file or select it then click the Open button.

Step Seven
QuickPwn will check to verify that the ipsw file is valid. After completetion of the verification, click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step Eight
You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, or Replace Boot Logos. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the clue arrow button.  Installing Cydia and Installer is highly recommended to enjoy the full jailbreak experience.

Step Nine
You will now be prompted to select your bootloader files. Click on the Browse button and select the 3.9 bootloader from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop. Repeat this for the 4.6 bootloader file. Then click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step Ten
QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone is still connected via USB cable before it continues. Click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step Eleven
QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Note: Pay attention and do exactly as it says

Step Twelve
Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreaking process.

Step Thirteen
Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it haz Pwned! Your iPhone will then reboot and run BootNeuter. Let BootNeuter do it’s thing, do not interupt it. This process will take about 5 minutes. Remember patience is a virtue. Your iPhone will reboot when it has completed.

Did you install some apps from Installer?

I had this problem too after I installed Kate from Installer.

I removed the app, then it works just fine after that.

if anyone is having problems with jailbreaking(ie)- once you try and jailbreak and the screen with the pineapple it reloads w/black background and white apple. well what you need to do is restore the iphone(do not sync anything when it ask,(previouse date download) once restored jailbreak as usual, then load bosspref on the phone and make sure nothing is hidden then reconnect the phone to itunes and you should be jailbroken and fine.

hi,
the procedure on this site is brilliantly easy along with the files being there required to unlock the latest 2.1 firmware, it took me 15 mins precisely to unlock my iphone 2g from 1.1.2 to 2.1… this is a site everyone must know who so ever owns an iphone…… thanks a ton.

My compliments on a very good procedure breakdown. Entire process, from start to finish, was just over 20 minutes, including the restoration of contact details, songs etc, from previous backup of the iPhone via iTunes.

Not even WinPwn can unlock iPhone 3G? Does this mean there aren’t any other ways to unlock iPhone 3G then something like TurboSim?

Comment by jackbauer
2008-09-23 21:19:40

turbosim works on the 3G, soon a software unlock will work, but until the hackers do their thing you got TurboSim….keep in mind that the 3G on t-mobile will not with the iPhone (just in case you are in the US)

This guide isn’t for 3G but the program will do it and the steps are pretty much identical except for no unlocking and use 3G files.

I should have the 3G jailbreak guide posted tomorrow.

try doing the entire process again and then hitting set up as new phone, if you have winpwned a phone, it works differently on the phone then quickpwn, so try setting up as new phone instead of uploading backup, its a little more effort to put all your music and stuff back on but beats the hell out of having no phone doesn’t it?

I had the same problem but got it working. All you need to use is, prior to starting the entire pwnage process, make sure you do the following:

1. Remove the ATT sim from the iPhone and insert the sim from your other carrier into the phone.

2. Set your iPhone into DFU (recovery) mode. To do this, have the phone connected to PC and turned on. Hold home button for 5 seconds (don’t release it yet). Then hold both power+home buttons for 10 seconds. Then release the power button and hold the home button for 30s.

If this doesn’t work, follow these instructions to set phone into DFU mode: http://sleepers.net/blank/dfu-mode/

3. Once your iPhone has been set to recovery/DFU mode, itunes will tell you that phone is in recovery mode and will ask whether you want to restore your phone.

It is at this moment where you’ll continue with the rest of the pwnage process (restore from within itunes, running Quickpwn, etc.).

This should do the trick…Hope it helps.

@ step 13 after my iPhone (2G) restarts nothing happens. It only shows the “Connect to iTunes” logo

ABSOLUTELY no restore from than on. Nothing works. Itunes 8 – restore to 2.1

iTunes 7.7 – restore to 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2

iTunes 7.5 – restore to 1.1.4

everytime I try to restore after my phone restarts during the restore process I get error 160?

nothing helps ! I think its totally bricked !

it will unlock and jailbrake your device if you’re having a first generation iPhone – so you can use your T-Mobile-card with it.
If you’re having an iPhone 3g the program will only jailbrake it and you cannot make telephone calls!

You need to restore your iPhone to factory first before you use QuickPwn.

Insert the sim from the provider you WISH to use first.

Clear down the folder where your iTunes restore files are Should be “C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates” (where %username% is your PC’s profile name)

Open iTunes with the iPhone connected and hold down the ‘home’ button. iTunes should recognise an iPone is connecting in ‘restore mode’. iTunes will now download and install the latest 2.1 firmware. Let it complete this but when it is finished do nothing more than close iTunes. DO NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE just close iTunes.

Now run QuickPwn select the newly downloaded firmware that iTunes just installed from the folder above, click on and tick all the required boxes, choose the boot file paths and click on, go through all the steps and once the phone reboots you will be active with no prompt to activate! :) Happy Dayzz :)

The crutial part is the iPhone firmware must never have been activated via iTunes in the first place otherwise it will always fail when you change SIM cards.

Hope this helps ricardo.

The absolute key here is to shut down itunes prior to using the pwn tool after loading 2.1 firmware WITHOUT activation. Thank you!

Hey, I found the solution for my previous problem.
First, you need to go AT&T to ask a NEW card without Activating in iTune. then do te whole thing with Quickpwn, after whole thing finished, use Cydia to sync your iPhone. when it finished, you can put you T-mobile SIM card in, it should workjust fine…..

2008-10-04 04:30:10

I did all the steps the site said to do, and it said that my Iphone successfully jailbreaked and all that other stuff; when I go to put my T-Mobile sim card in, it says “different sim detected.”
I tried doing the program like 2-3 times and nothing happens. The Cydia and Installer programs installed just fine. I tried doing it once without the extras and once with.
Can someone please help?

hey everyone successfully jailbroke and unlock my 1.1.4 1st gen iphone to 2.1 firmware using this method. Did it first by putting it into restore mode by holding down the home key and placing it in the dock, uploading the 2.1 firmware and then using quickpwn. ABSOLUTELY no problems. Thanks guys!

hey now no worries you can connect your iphone to itunes and manage your music without worrying. And for people still having problems, i’ll just share with you how i did it then maybe you could give it a go? cause i had absolutely no problems

My iphone was running 1.1.4, unlocked and jailbroken by ziphone 3.0

1. Put iphone into restore mode by holding down the home button and placing iphone into dock(connected to pc)

2. Hold down shift and click restore, load the 2.1 firmware that you can download from the quickpwn guide.

3. Once the restore was completed, ran quickpwn and followed the steps listed here on this guide

thats it! it was really easy. kinda wondering why others had a problem with it. been using it for a day, snyced all my music. Wifi, calls, smses work perfect.

Hi Shane, I ve been running 1.1.4 for ages also unlocked with ziphone 3.0. (phone originally came with 1.1.2) Just wondering if your phone is still ok with 2.1? Any problems whatsoever? Still not sure if I wanna upgrade due all the “problems” people are reporting… Cheers!

hey roger, sounds like our iphones are really alike. Mine too came with 1.1.2 and i unlocked it with ziphone 3.0 to 1.1.4. Main reason i upgraded to 2.1 was cause 1.1.4 started getting buggy after i had too many apps on it. Truth be told, everything has been running smoothly. Little slower loading times here and there, and the apps i downloaded free from the app store crashed once(re-downloaded em and now they’re fine), but other than that no major problems and 2.1 is great. Hopefully the app problems with the app store were just a one-off thing. The apps i have now are running just fine. and the whole quickpwn process went really smoothly and easily. Hope that helps man

I too have also had absolutely no problems with this firmware upgrade, and was quick and easy to install. Buddy of mine also had no problems on his end. Both of us were upgrading from 1.1.4. I think those who are complaining with problems obviously can’t read directions properly, and screwed up something during the proccess. You’d be surpised how many stupid people are impatient and turn-off the iphone specifically when it states not to do so. ROFL!

I just got a replacement phone from Apple a few days ago. It’s a 2g phone. I do a restore through Itunes 8 to ver 2.1 successfully. When I run the Quickpwn it gets up to “Wait for Iphone to connect in Recovery Mode…” The 4 other steps are greyed out. The phone will reboot and shows the USB cable pointing to Itunes. I’ve tried completing the greyed out steps but nothing happens. I’ve also waited several minutes without doing anything once it gets to this point. Nothng happens. Any help is appreciated. I’m curious if they’ve implemented something with the most recent phones. Thanks.

You may not be able to restore if itune does not like your sim card. Here is what I do:

Take out the sim card; this will make iphone work without a sim.

Connect to itune, and setup as a new phone.

Do the shift-restore.

Jailbreak and unlock as the guide.

When done, insert any sim card. now you can connect with itune and it will not reject the sim card.

Backup from your “other iphone” setup.

Now you can change sim card without reboot.

Hope this help.

Guys,

Without knowing i first activated my iphone on a o2 pay as go sim before attempting this.

I did however attempt the unlock which did not work however the procedure went correctly, as i was reading the replys should i get a brand new pay as you go sim and not activate it via iphone and run the procedure to unlock it.

What should i do, thanks all.

It’s documented everywhere that Ziphone is notorious for screwing up the Wifi on phones, which is why you should of never used it – should of used Liberty+. It’s most likely screwed on the hardware level if QuickPwn didn’t fix it.

I NEED HELP!!
I accidently upgraded my unlocked/jailbroken 8gb 1st generation 1.1.4 to the new 2.1. Now, I downloaded the quickpwn the firmware and the 2 bl files. In quickpwn I got stuck in the part where it says:
Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button.

Which I did and am getting a little frustrated because i know nothing about this sort of stuff. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and Why is it getting stuck at the same spot everytime i try to jailbreak?

Does anyone know another way to do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you guys select the “unlock” option? The reason why it doesn’t connect to network when you insert your sim is because it is still locked! Read the directions properly, and do it again.

PLEASE help! Tried Pwnage to unlock and jailbrake 1st generation phone, initially used with a Mac. First, I restored it on the Mac. Then moved to a Windows machine. Tried the program first with old, inactive ATT SIMs card. Got the message that “SIMs card not recognized – connect to itunes.” Then tried the “Shift-restore” with no SIMs and get error messages in itunes that there’s an error and it cannot be restored. Have tried holding Home-Power for 15 sec, then POwer for 2 seconds. Now all I get it a graphic of the USB cable with an arrow to itunes. iTunes cannot restore it. QuickPwn tells me to do the Home-Power 15 sec then Power 2 sec, then QuickPwn crashes. PLEASE HELP. I’m quite stuck now!

Hey Guys good news!

for those who were having problems with the QuickPwn.exe file giving them the “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.” problem, well like I mentioned above I have a Vista 6b bit machine with AVG antivirus running and AVg was detecting the QuickPwn.exe file as a Torjan virus and it wuold not allow it to open no matter what. so I moved my Pwnage folder into my other computer that runs on XP and this computer also has AVG. I quit the AVG antivirus from running, but that was not enough I had to go to Task Manager and make sure any processes that started with “avg…” was ended and stopped, there were a few and I stopped them all, then I went back to run the QuickPwn.exe and voila! sure enough it worked, also it’s important to note that I have “.net framework 2″ installed on my machine, I’ve done this a while ago so I’m not sure where the link is but if you Google “Microsoft .net framework 2″ I am sure you will find it easily. SO i did this on my XP machien and sure enough everythign worked just fine, and I am pretty sure this will aslo work on the Vista OS’s as long as you quit your anti-virus program and all of it’s processes in the task manager, but yeah to break this down in simple point form, to run QuickPwn.exe you need
1- “.net framework 2″ installed
2- All of your Antivrus programs stopped (not running) along with all it’s Processes, that you have to “End Processes” via the Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) if you follow these steps QuickPwn.exe should start up without a hitch! again I did this through XP not sure about Vista but Im 90% confident it will also work on Vista, I hope this helps the few frustrated people that recently posted just before me, CHEERS AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS GREAT METHOD TO UPGRADE our old skool 1st gen iphones (1.1.4) to a shiny new 2.1 firmware

I just have one question, and Im sorry if it is a stupid one. Now that it’s unlocked, can I still sync it with the songs and pics on my comp through itunes? And to add to that, I have my 3G iphone set up on this laptop as well. Will syncing them both on this comp affect either of them? Thanks for your response!

this process really works cool… i had accidentally upgraded my iphone 2g by version 2.1…and my unlocked phone got locked….and i just followed this procedure and it really worked out very well in 20 min….thanks a lot for this info… just a word of caution…in the step 12, if you feel nothing is happening, dont get tensed…you re-do that step alone by holding the home button properly and following the instructions given….

After selecting the ipsw file in step 6, step 7 is supposed to automatically verify that the ipsw file is valid.

How long is step 7 supposed to take? It does not appear that anything is happening here and the blue arrow hasn’t appeared after 10 minutes.
Please let me kmow what could I be doing wrong.

This worked perfect for me, i had an already jailbroken iphone (1st generation) and i followed the steps above, then open cydia and let it run and reboot and everything works fine now. when you connect to itunes for the 1st time, make sure u choose it as a “new iphone”, dont choose the restore option, and then you just have to sync you music, videos again and your done!!

I jailbroke my phone about 4 months ago and wifi just stoped working is that because of the software, or the phone, everything else works perfectly except for the wifi. Is there a fix or should I back up the phone and reload everything into the phone or not back up everything and reload software into phone.

FYI Only. I recently installed a app called contact cover. It installed fine but when i went to use it, it wouldn’t show me the numbers for longer than like 2sec then went to black. I uninstalled it and it took off all my contact and force recovered. I had to do a restore to factory then reinstall QuickPwn. Like i stated earlier this is FYI and a warning.

Solution, Fixed for Wifi Greyed out after jailbreak (Iphone 2G)

If your wifi connection problem is not due to AP settings (i.e. icon greyed out), I have tried various methods and found this to be the working solution to my case. I have used all jailbreak programs (quickpwn, winpwn, ziphone and others) and found the solution fix for Wifi. Would like to share so that the rest can spend their quality time on something more productive rather than going through what i have been through.

Despite the facts of some saying downgrade and upgrade of firmware, or using different version of itune to solve the wifi greyed out, it does not matter in this process.

I am on the following env when wifi is greyed out: Vista, Itune 8.0.2.2, Firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak. tried also on a corrupted restored and it works in both cases.

Solution to the problem:
- Use Itune to shift restore your firmware back to 2.0.2
- Use winpwn to create custom firmware on 2.0.2 (if you are on ATT sim), do not need to select unlock
- Shift restore iphone using the custom firmware created by winpwn

note: if you PC does not recognize iphone, first when iphone is detected as an unknown device, delete root hub one by one and vista will redetect one of them as mobile apple device. To do restore, switch off your phone, unplug USB cable, plug it in again while holding the home button for 20secs, vista will detect it as mobile device.

Today my unlocked iPhone 2g crashed and the symptoms were a blank screen and would only vibrate when i received a call. I tried the usual turn on/off procedure to reset the phone, but that didn’t work. So i panicked and took it to the local Apple store, while there they restored my phone. And now i’m trying to unlock it myself for the first time since owning my 2g.

I downloaded the required files, but when i reach the Browse for Firmware screen and upload the firmware all it does is process and then stop and do nothing else. It says i need to have “The correct IPSW will have a name beginning with iPhone1,1_2.2.1″ so i tried uploading the one provided iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw. To no avail it doesn’t work, so i proceeded to download iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore. I then tried again and still nothing.

What am i doing wrong? Thanks in advance =)

I have a T-Mobile sim and also got the “different sim detected please connect to itunes”. Here’s how i got it to work.

Take the att sim out of the iphone and restore to 2.1 framework through itunes without any sim card in the iphone (i used the latest version of itunes). When the restore process is almost finished itunes will prompt you to insert a unlocked sim into the iphone. Ignore the prompt and insert your t-mobile sim into the iphone. Itunes will detect that you put the wrong sim into the iphone but that doesnt matter, ignore it. then run the quickpwn process like you normally would with the t-mobile sim in your phone and you should be fine.

I have a 2G iphone with version 3.0 installed on it. I have downloaded all the files above to jailbreak the phone, but when i unzip the file iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore it doesnt save it as a ipsw file. I also tried downloading the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore and it still doesnst save as ipsw so when i open itunes and hold down shift and click restore, i cant select this file because it just tries to open it up as a folder instead of its own ipsw file…..any suggestions?
TIA!!

I am following the instructions here and QuickPwn gets stuck on Step 6, it never validates the file (iPhone1,1_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw).

What can I do? It has already been restored and I cant get into itunes to try another version like 2.1… Im stuck.
