Apple has released their latest iPhone 2.2 beta firmware coupled with a pre-release of the iPhone SDK to developers. Copy and Paste isn’t there (WTF?!?) and push notification the feature that was pulled last minute from iPhone 2.1 is still absent. Rumors are flying about push notification being added in an upcoming build of iPhone 2.2, the following quote from Steve Jobs is fueling the fire;
We’re running a bit late,” Jobs allegedly told a MacRumors member. “We want to get it 100% right the first time.
So far the only confirmed changes are in the iPhone’s Safari 2.2 with the Google search bar being accessible without having to tap the URL bar and the reload button is on it’s own now too.
Good news on the iPhone 2.2 hacking front, the iPhone Dev Team have already confirmed this new firmware can be jailbroken by both QuickPwn and PwnageTool. Below are the note’s from their blog;
- They’re continuing with their ski-resort theme; Version 2.2 is nicknamed TImberline.
- They’ve gone back to using expiry dates. The first 2.2 beta is due to expire on November 30, 2008. They stopped using expiry dates about halfway through the 2.1 betas, but for some reason they’ve started using them again.
- Version 2.2 is still vulnerable to pwnage and quickpwn on everything but iPod Touch 2G.
To demonstrate point #3, here’s the non-AppStore application Terminal.app running on 2.2, showing the kernel build information.
iPhone 2.2 Jailbroken Term App
Hardware already vulnerable to pwnage remains vulnerable in version 2.2.

so no MMS then!! Apple ya suck!!!
Have you given SwirlyMMS a chance? There’s a 14 day trial available through Cydia. And the full license is not more than $8.
Works a charm.
SwirlyMMS does NOT work with iPhones on the AT&T network. Believe me I tried everything.
This is NOT an Apple or SwirlyMMS issue, it is an AT&T issue as AT&T does not want you to send/receive MMS from the iPhone.
They block you by the IMEI number which identifies your phone as an iPhone.
In this case it is not Apple, but AT&T that sucks, as unlocked iPhones with SwirlyMMS work just fine on the TMobile network…
OK your half right…yes it is the IMEI that blocks it on ATTs end but the reason ATT blocks it is because apple told them to in the contract for exclusive rights to sell iPhone…Apple originally went to Verizon and the MMS issue is one of the reasons Verizon said no to Apple. So it is Apple that sucks and ATT…Apple for saying NO MMS and ATT for agreeing…
so why is it that they dont want us to use MMS. Dont they understand that everyone sends pics?
swirlly mms doesnt work on u k o2 contract phones either ive found all the settings i can found i even bought the app :( service denied (pe)
What the F%#K apple! The iPHONE is suppose to do EVERYTHING and it DOES NOTHING! Us customers paid $600 for a phone and over a $100 a month for the plan! Give us MMS already! JESUS CHRIST! And we want Landscape Texting & Email as well!
I couldn’t agree more! If we can use Landscape typing for safari…. F-ing let us use it for Texting!!
Speak For Your Self, Not everybody i couldnt give a shit about this stuff
Damn? Psycho much? Take a chill pill. MMS isn’t the be all end all. Emailing photos works perfect for me. All my friends have iPhones and those that don’t… well why would I want to get texts from them anyways…
The Copy and Past that maybe apple is creating has already been created in just the form suggested above, Called CopierciN and available in Cydia.
This seems to be the way with apple at the moment, refuse to carry apps in the app store, copy the ideas of developers and release it as their own.
MMS is also been released as a commercial app on Cydia, this works for VodaAU and VodaNZ customers without issue, sorry to all you AT&T plebs, not any technical hurdle to overcome, only internal politics for apple and the networks.
This leaves many business people whom rely on sending contacts to people, forwarding on important SMS’s and generally moving text from and too where You want it, are left with the only option of Jail breaking and Purchasing some of the alt solutions and even back to RIM and HTC/WinMob.
2.2 I hope you bring the lil pc in my pocket into the 21st century and give me functions even a $49 cell ph has.
IPod Radio Remote compatible for the Iphone 3G! please! Greetings from Argentina
Except that screenshot is from an iPhone 2.1.
My iPhone says exactly the same version, that corresponds to XNU/Darwin 9.4.1 (Mac OS X 10.5.4), and it is, of course, not 2.2!
iPhone 2.2 should show 9.4.2, 9.5 or even 9.6.
I cant believe there is still no copy and paste and no MMS my little sister’s POS $30 phone can send and receive pics and my $400 iphone cant. I am gonna get the Blackberry Storm when it comes out. Switching to Verizon, ATT suck balls anyway.
You guys keep asking many things.
Why don’t create your own phone and use it then :LOL:
iphone clown… it’s not like they’re asking for it to do voice recognition texting, or anything wacky… they (and I) want stuff that phones have done for years. I could record video and send MMSs on a phone 5+ years ago.
right guys a bit of news from the inside of the mobile world…by the end of next year rumour has it that all mobile companies will be stopping the mms facility on the basis of reducing copyright laws etc so apple arent going to do it just for it to be taken off again in a few months.
do it by blooming email it is quicker easier plus all u have to do is view ya emails on ya iphone anyway…so whats the prob
Hey for those who want MMS Swirly MMS does work with AT&T. Mine didnt work at first but its been working for the last 2 weeks. I changed my apn settings and it’s worked ever since then. I did call and have AT&T change the data plan and add unlimited MMs plus said i was using my Blackjack1.
