Dong Ngo, one of the editors over at CNET, has confirmed that Tuan Anh Do, a 29 year old Vietnamese iPhone hacker, has successfully unlocked the iPhone 3G. Now this isn’t any easy to use free software unlock; you know, what the iPhone dev team have been striving to accomplish, instead we have a complicated hardware unlock requiring removal of the iPhone’s baseband chip. Yeah, this unlock ain’t no joke.

A technician opens up a brand new iPhone 3G in one of Tuan Anh’s Hanoi shops.

The phone’s motherboard with the baseband chip at the bottom and marked with a red X for viewing’s sake.

The baseband chip (which I marked with a red X to make it more visible) has been extracted from the motherboard.

…the unlock Devil-God is summoned…
…baseband is now unlocked…

The chip gets glued back onto the motherboard.

Seems utterly too easy….

what happens when the next update wants to update the baseband chip

or apple adds code into itunes to look for baseband chip

or is this how a unlocked iphone actually is (without a baseband chip)

i just got a new phone, so im gonna wait a bit

…if you read /through/ the article, you’d see that he puts the chip back in after.

He takes it out, dumps the info on the chip into a file on a computer, edits said file with a hex editor – taking out the code that locks it to a specific carrier, then writes the data back to the baseband chip, and puts it all back together.

too difficult to do on your own. I would buy a pre-unlocked one done by a pro.

or you buy your iphone 3g (16GB) for about EUR 600.- at http://www.digitec.ch. Unlocked – legally! They import their iphones from poland where the iPhone is sold without any lock… have fun.

Wow, this seems like way too much scary work for me, I’d just rather unlock it with software!
