Grand Theft Auto isn’t out on the iPhone but Payback is — it’s basically a 3D version of the old top-down GTA gameplay, improved with better rendering and lighting. You control the game by pressing “buttons” on the screen, and tilting the iPhone around, and Touch Arcade says it works well. Some missions are apparently tough, but in terms of what GTA is really about driving around and generally causing mayhem — Payback will deliver.

If you’d always wondered what it would be like to be a master criminal, then Payback is the game for you. It’s entirely non-linear – to complete a level you simply have to obtain a certain number of points – how you get those points is entirely up to you; you can do what the local kingpin tells you, uncover secret missions or just go on a mad killing spree. There are lots of hidden surprises to discover, so you’ll have to play the game through several times to find all the extras.

Features:

  • Fully 3d texture mapped environment.
  • Stunning lighting effects (iPhone and GP2X versions).
  • Eleven huge cities to explore
  • Dozens of vehicles to drive, each with their own unique handling characteristics. Includes trucks, cars, buses, boats, tanks and a few other surprises!
  • Non-linear and varied mission structure. Includes missions in buildings, stealth missions, and more!
  • Spectacular physics model.
  • Advanced alpha-channelling effects. (Check out those explosions and lens flares!)
  • Distortion-mapped reflections.
  • Advanced 3d audio system. Tracks up to five hundred sounds, realistically simulates doppler effect and the inverse-square law.

Payback is also available for GBA, Mac, GP2X and Classic Amiga.

Payback is on AppStore shelves for $6.99USD and is rated 12+
