Today at WWDC, Apple announced that the long awaited iPhone OS 3.0 will be available June 17th. iPhone OS 3.0 brings in over 100 new features.

A few of the mentioned features include:

  • MMS: While the inclusion of multimedia messaging in iPhone OS 3.0 was discussed at Apple’s previous media event, Apple today revealed the MMS will not be available for AT&T customers until “late summer”, as much as several months after the launch of the new operating system. A number of other wireless carriers throughout the world will be supporting MMS at launch.
  • Internet Tethering: At its previous media event, Apple chose not to focus on tethering, addressing it only in a Q&A period by saying that while the functionality is being built into the iPhone OS 3.0, cooperation from carriers would be needed in order to enable it. During today’s keynote, Apple announced that tethering via USB and Bluetooth will be offered on a number of carriers at launch, although AT&T will not be supporting it for the time being.
  • “Find My iPhone”: A newly-advertised feature only for MobileMe subscribers allows customers to track the location of their lost iPhone, send alerts to the device, and perform remote wipes for data security. If later found, wiped iPhones can then be restored by syncing with iTunes.

This major update to the iPhone OS will be available for free to all existing iPhone users and will be $9.95USD to iPod Touch users.

These are some hidden stuff people don’t see..

1. Peer-to-peer connectivity requires compatible applications, which can be downloaded from the App Store when available.

2. MMS support from AT&T coming in late summer. MMS is not supported on first-generation iPhone. Sending video via MMS is not supported on iPhone 3G.

3. Downloads over 10MB require a Wi-Fi connection.

4. Tethering is not currently offered in the U.S. and some other countries. See your carrier for availability.

5. The iTunes Store is available only to persons age 13 or older in the U.S. and many other countries; see http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww for a list of countries. Requires compatible hardware and software and Internet access; fees may apply. Terms apply. See http://www.apple.com/itunes/store for more information.

Apple is full of Nazi bastards!

Not Apple… stupid AT&T! Apple has those options available to other carriers.. i.e. Orange etc… they will have MMS and tethering available… AT&T is dropping the ball, PLUS they’re trying to figure out a “new” price plan for iPhone 3GS users… not that it isn’t already expensive.

Why do iPod users always have to pay for firmware updates?

Because iPods only support Apple when you buy it. iPhones bring in cash every month with overpriced data plans.

Indeed, what a crap. Updates should be free for the ipod touch too. In any case, give it 3… 2… 1… and it will be available you know where.

Is there any way to get the iphone 3g S withour a contract with AT&T? I have been using my first gen since it came out and i have been loving it! sadly i dropped my phone and the glass broke. the digitizer also seems to have stopped working. I would fix it, but the digitezer+lcd is 90 dollars…….it makes sense to get the new 3G, but i want to use it on t-mobile.

i am confident the devs will unlock it.

so any suggestions on how to get it?

Guys

3.0 looks promising and I’d like to get it asap, but will I be ok to install the official version on my current jailbroken 3g phone on Wednesday without risking not being able to jasilbreak it at a later date?

Did’nt really understand the last lot of jailbreak updates regarding baseband etc so don’t want to be too hasty on 17th.
