Update: iPhone Dev Team have updated redsn0w to work with the iPhone 3G S – This tutorial will for the same for all iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s. If you would like to unlock your iPhone then read this tutorial

Download redsn0w v0.8:
Redsn0w 0.8 for Windows
Redsn0w 0.8 for Mac OS X
Redsn0w 0.8 for Linux

With the release of Redsn0w some days ago, people might be new to redsn0w and might not know how to work it. On this post, we’ll show you how to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch with redsn0w version 0.7.2 – This should be the same as windows on both iPhone and iPod Touch. In this case, we’re using Mac OS X. Please. we can not stress this enough, read through this post carefully before attempting anything with redsn0w.

Note: We are not responsible if your device blows up in the middle of the jailbreak process (not that it will) or if your device doesn’t turn on after using this. Use, strictly, at your own risk!

  1. First is first, download redsn0w here (for Windows) or here (for Mac OS X)
  2. Second, Download iPhone OS 3.0 or whatever firmware you’ll be using to jailbreak – here
  3. Alright, now that you have the starting materials downloaded and on your desktop, fire up redsn0w
  4. Click browse and search for the iphone/ipod touch ipsw. In this case, we’re using the iPhone1,2 3.0 restore ipsw)
  5. Redsn0w will then process your ipsw and identify the ipsw
  6. After, redsn0w will prepate data required to jailbreak your device
  7. Redsn0w will ask you if you want to install Cydia or Icy or both or neither. Tick the box if you would like to install them or untick if not.
  8. After you got that done, redsn0w will ask you to turn off your device. (Press and hold down the power button on your device until you see the slide to power off screen and slide to shut down the device) *NOTE* Make sure your device is turned OFF and plugged IN
  9. Redsn0w will then guide you through entering your device into DFU mode
  10. Your device will then reboot then redsn0w will start uploading the jailbreak data onto your device
  11. Once redsn0w is uploading the data onto your device, you’re done! You will then notice images on your device, don’t touch the device till all the images are gone

If you would like to unlock your iPhone then read this tutorial

Note: We are not responsible if your device blows up in the middle of the jailbreak process (not that it will) or if your device doesn’t turn on after using this. Use, strictly, at your own risk!

So, I take it that Redsn0w has been updated to include Icy? I had to install Icy manually with Cydia…

Once the Jailbreak Process Begins. The Redsnow quits itself and stops responding. This is on Windows.

As stupid as this may sound. For windows users, You have to get the timing perfectly when you are putting it in recovery mode. You have to hold the power button right when it says to and what not. I tried it again with perfectly timing and it worked. Hooray.

Thanks.

Seems to not work on Vista. I tried on my desktop and laptop with no luck. I had to whip out my 2005 Toshiba laptop with XP for it to work.

Used redsnow 4 days ago and had to restore iPhone back to factory settings as it became very unstable. It kept locking up, running soooooo slow and just generally acting in poor manner. Has anyone else experienced this ??? I’m waiting for proper quickpwn……..

Tried Redsnow again with new -02 version and im now having WORSE problems than before !!!!

I done everything 100% by the book and after jailbreak i try to run cydia and it asks for “Essential Upgrade” i accept/confirm it starts to unpack then says various error messages and the Cydia update DOES NOT WORK !!! WTF !!

I have jailbroken again straight away and still no joy :(

I really do have respect for you guys doing what u do ur Legends. You make the iphone even better than Apple care to make it BUT why release something FULLY untested which crashes peeps iPhones ????

Don’t install ICY because it’s clashing with Cydia.
Restore ur phone into a fresh one, and only choose Cydia when you jailbreak.

(btw, I used a Mac computer. Haven’t tried it on PC. I have an iPhone 3G.)

If you really want to install ICY, then follow the instructions below:

1.Restore into a fresh iPhone. Jailbreak. Choose both Cydia and Icy.
2.After you’re done jailbreaking your phone with both Cydia and Icy, try to upgrade Cydia Essentials again. When it wouldn’t, ignore it by exiting Cydia after it’s done reloading or something.
3.Fire up redsn0w AGAIN without restoring ur phone. This time, DO NOT include ICY; choose ONLY CYDIA.

After the second jailbreaking process, Cydia should upgrade flawlessly.

If you are using Intelliscreen (a wonderful hack app), do NOT install the 2.32 version (or whatever version it was that is lower than 2.93). It WILL screw up your screen like crazy by flipping the “pages” back n forth every time you exit an app, or press the home button once while on the home screen.
You won’t see the “agree” button anyway when you attempt to install Intelliscreen 2.32 on OS 3.0
I had to use diskaid (hard way) to take it off my iPhone, or restore ur phone again (easy way).
One way to fix this flipping mania is to either lock ur screen, then unlock again, or press and hold the home button until it stops flipping.

Couple other apps that don’t work (as far as I know and tested): Navizon, iRealSMS (it won’t send but can receive), iPhoneVideoRecorder, and Intelliscreen lower than v2.93

I am not sure if this redsn0w v0.7 is only for OS 3.0 coz I tried to jailbreak an iPod touch 2G and it couldn’t recognize the 2.2.1 IPSW file. Could anyone confirm this please?

everytime redsnow would start the jailbreaking, itunes would close itself unexpectedly and virtually disconnect the iphone 3g from being seen by redsnow. im using vista.

Sometimes redsnow would get stuck on “waiting for reboot” or it would say “done” when there was no installing done to the phone

I’ve downloaded the file iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw several times, according to the website it is the correct one, in addition I would think it would say it was invalid, not unrecognizable when attempting to read it in.

i kept trying this morning and it finally worked..the only thing i can say is just keep trying! i didnt do anything different, although, when i did jailbreak it with cydia and icy, i noticed problems with cydia..crashing and not upgrading…

if u r using the 3g, and u installed icy and cydia and r having trouble with cydia…

reboot the iphone, rejailbreak it…this time only selecting cydia, and u should have no problems!!!

remember to somehow turn off 3g if ur usin tmo usa

I can confirm that this should indeed fix the issue if you are having problems and opted to install BOTH Cydia and Icy. I’m running Vista and when went through the jailbreak a 2nd time, this time ONLY choosing Cydia, it worked fine.

I was able to install and use Cycorder, which is the only reason why I chose to jailbreak my iPhone 3G :)

Here’s my experience: I ran redsn0w, held the power/home buttons as per instructions, and after a while the redsn0w message said the phone was entering DFU mode. However, after a quick “entering DFU mode” message, the program went to a “waiting for reboot” screen and it just hung there; the phone screen is still blacked out, nothing indicating that it is rebooting. This happens every time I enter DFU mode. I then took the phone into Recovery Mode and at that point the program went to the copy screens (ramdisk, kernel), and the program said it was done, but the phone never flashed any images, and after I manually rebooted it I was still taken to the activation screen. Thanks for the program, I’ll keep trying in case I’m doing something wrong; but looking doubtful now.

Wait for a while. If it doesn’t load in 5 mins at most, you have to restore ur iPhone into a fresh one.

Jailbroken iPhones takes a little longer than “normal” iPhones to load.

Hope it helped. :)

It actually worked very well for my iPod Touch 2G on Windows XP Pro SP3 with Cydia only. Follow the on screen instructions and you’ll be fine. Also check it out on Youtube. ;) Now I just have to find a way to get that damn “AppSync for 3.0″ without a wirelss connection (probably using DiskAid)… Any ideas on how to do that ?

To do this, just open itunes, hold shift and click “restore. choose the iphone firmware 3.0 and let it do its thing. after that, use redsnow to unlock and jailbreak. easy!

For those stuck on a white screen, with the computer saying “Waiting for reboot” no matter how long you wait, I figured out a fix. Simply unplug the cord from the iPod and quickly plug in it again and it’ll go through with the installation. This might take a few tries to work right (it did for me).

Okay I’m having a HUGE problem here.
I jailbroke the iPod (2G), then tried to jailbreak it again so I could get Cydia but something really messed up happened.
All my apps and music are on my iPod (2G) but NONE of the apple software is there. NONE!! No settings button, no music button, no appstore button. NOTHING. And iTunes doesn’t pick it up anymore. I’m very distressed and don’t know how to fix this issue.

And when I try to re-jailbreak it, it never turns back on after the second reboot. Just powers off and stays off.

Just did a full jailbreak. Still no Apple software. Went through all the necessary steps and rebooted just fine. But still no default Apple OS buttons and not connecting
to iTunes at all. I’m still rather distressed.
Can someone help?
