Today, Apple released a patch to fix the serious SMS security vulnerability that we reported yesterday. iPhone OS 3.0.1, by the looks of it, does not include any new features, but it’s a good idea to update.

Updating to 3.0.1 will make your jailbreak and/or unlock go away so if you don’t want to loose your jailbreak then I suggest you wait a bit while the iPhone Dev Team give the green light to update.

If you want to read the release document from Apple you may do so here

Security researchers are planning to publicize a serious SMS security vulnerability at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, NV. In theory this security flaw can allow malicious hackers to ‘take over every iPhone in the world.’ Of course, they would need to know the phone number of every iPhone ever sold which is, I would assume, not such an easy task.

Using a flaw they’ve found in the iPhone’s handling of text messages, the researchers say they’ll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device’s camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.

Security researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner have notified Apple about the vulnerability over a month ago, but Apple has yet to address the issue and release a patch for it.

Charlie Miller would suggest you turn the device off as quickly as possible if you happen to receive an SMS text message containing only a single square character.

That’s right, some days ago we posted that the release of the MobileMe iDisk was sorta hinted by Apple and now, It’s out on the AppStore. Now, you will be able to view and share your files that you have stored on your MobileMe iDisk right from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like you can download a file from your iDisk to your iPhone incase you end up with no Wi-Fi or 3G service.

Description:

With MobileMe iDisk, you can view and share the files on your iDisk right from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Log in with your MobileMe username and password and you’ll see a list of the folders and files on your iDisk. Select a file to view it on your iPhone. To share a file with someone else, just tap the share icon, choose your recipients, and MobileMe iDisk will send them an email with a link to download your file directly from MobileMe. You can assign a password to keep your files secure and even limit the number of days the download will be available – all right from your iPhone.

Features:

  • View files on your iDisk
  • Access Public folders
  • Easily share files from your iPhone
  • Quickly access recently viewed files
  • View iPhone supported file types – including iWork, Office, PDF, QuickTime and more (Files larger than 20MB may not be viewable)

You are required to have an iPhone or iPod Touch, obviously. Your device must be up-to-date with the current firmware which is iPhone OS 3.0 and you are also required to have a MobileMe subscription. This application is free from Apple and you can download it here

Apple has released the iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 (Build 7C116a) to registered developers. Along with the OS beta release, Apple released iPhone SDK 3.1, Beta 3 (Build 9M2808). Both downloads are available only to registered developers through Apple’s iPhone Dev Center.

Changes are yet to be explored and listed.

Apple is reportedly relying on new developer tools present in iPhone OS 3.1 to deploy augmented reality applications that are capable of overlaying live video from the iPhone’s camera with real-time data.

Many folks have been waiting for the official MobileMe iDisk application to arrive to the iPhone but Apple has been slow to deliver. A tech note on Apple’s Technial Support page hinting that an iDisk application for both iPhone and iPod Touch is actually on it’s way. There is still no official release date but when Apple is ready, it’ll go up asap.

Unfortunately, the tech note disappeared really quick from Apple’s website, clearly this was human error. But, If you need a solution to access your MobileMe iDisk, ReaddleDocs apparently does a good job on doing so. ReaddleDocs is a paid official iPhone application available in the AppStore for $4.99USD and if you would like to purchase this application you may do so here

Developer Till Schadde has discovered a security flaw that allows AIM instant messages sent to certain unlocked and jailbroken iPhones to be routed to unintended recipients.

Till tested the service by sending an AIM from the OS X desktop using iChat to his iPhone. He then received a reply back from a random recipient. It is clear that this is a Push problem in the message addressing – each iPhone is assigned its own identifier and receives messages from a central server operated by Apple – although this may change.

Schadde reported via a tweet that AOL is investigating the problem, however, he suggests the issue isn’t on AOL’s system. It’s not yet clear how widespread the problem is. If you believe you have this problem, let us know in the comments!

Today, Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced that it will be offering iPhone-enabled features of some of it’s future blu-ray releases. What does this mean? It means you’ll be able to, essentially, interact with the particular iPhone-enabled feature with your iPhone. Universal Studio’s initial launch for the concept is on a special Blu-Ray edition of Fast & Furious, which releases July 28th. Utilizing an Internet-connected Blu-ray player and a free companion iPhone application to be released to the App Store, you will be able to use your iPhone or iPod touch to view and interact with a “Virtual Car Garage” highlighting the cars used in the film.

Powered by BD-Live, the 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray release of Fast & Furious will utilize this interactive technology tied to its “Virtual Car Garage” bonus feature. With iPhone or iPod touch in-hand, Blu-ray viewers can use their devices’ touch screens to control 360-degree views of the movie’s supercharged street-racers and instantly punch up exclusive technical specs for the film’s high-tech cars.

In addition, Universal also plans to extend the concept in future releases, introducing additional iPhone-formatted content, “virtual remote” applications, and social networking features.

Later this year on select Universal releases, consumers will also be able to access bonus content found on their Blu-ray disc and download it into their iPhone or iPod touch to watch features on-the-go; use the devices as a virtual remote to control their Blu-ray disc features; and/or access additional detailed information about the film, its cast and more while watching the movie. Releases will also integrate with social network applications or sites such as Facebook and Twitter to allow users to update their friends about movie-related activities.

The iPhone Dev Team released an update to ultrasn0w (Version 0.9) and the update fixed a majority of problems seen by ultrasn0w users but you may still see a few problems here and there…

Problems you may see include:

  • Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
  • Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation! If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim. Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation
  • T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network. (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
  • Certain unofficial plans have limitations on whether you can make calls and use data at the same time. That’s not unlock-related.
  • Some people have installed previous versions of ultrasn0w using non-standard techniques. While the ultrasn0w 0.9 update should have removed all previous versions of ultrasn0w, these users may have outsmarted our removal. So make sure you don’t still see /usr/bin/ultrasn0w present if you’re at ultrasn0w 0.9 (which doesn’t have such a binary anymore).
  • If you don’t need or plan to update to ultrasn0w 0.9 from a previous version, you can avoid having that red badge over Cydia by removing repo666 as a Cydia source. Don’t worry, you can always add it back later :) If you follow us on twitter you’ll be advised of any new updates anyway.

The iPhone Dev Team has pushed out a great update for their IPhone 3G and 3GS unlocking tool, ultrasn0w. This update fixes a bunch of little bugs here and there.

Features:

  • Works on both 3G and 3GS
  • Works on hacktivated devices
  • Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device
  • Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).
  • Doesn’t install any additional daemon
  • Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
  • Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :)
  • Is available now via Cydia. Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that’s ultrasn0w with a zero!)

If you haven’t yet updated to ultrasn0w 0.9 then we highly suggest you do! So fire up cydia and update that puppy!
