Apple released iPhone OS 3.0.1 to fix a serious SMS vulnerability in the iPhone OS where your iPhone can be completely taken over by receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.1 in the same way you would jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0 with redsn0w.
Please follow these instructions clearly and you’ll be a-o-k. Now, before we begin you may notice that we use the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW to jailbreak our iPhone OS 3.0.1 device, this is no mistake. When you get asked to select the iPhone firmware you have installed then choose the iPhone OS 3.0 IPSW. Please make sure you have updated your device to 3.0.1 by either updating officially via iTunes or restoring via iTunes. Keep in mind that restoring your iPhone will erase your iPhone’s content. Also, please don’t mind the screenshots saying redsn0w version 0.72 – Use the latest redsn0w version, it’ll be the same as the screenshots below.
Note: We are not responsible if your device blows up in the middle of the jailbreak process (it wont) or if your device doesn’t turn on after using this. Use, strictly, at your own risk!
- First is first, download redsn0w here (for Windows) or here (for Mac OS X)
- Second, Download iPhone OS 3.0 or whatever firmware you’ll be using to jailbreak – here
- Alright, now that you have the starting materials downloaded and on your desktop, fire up redsn0w
- Click browse and search for the iphone/ipod touch ipsw. In this case, we’re using the iPhone1,2 3.0 restore ipsw)
- Redsn0w will then process your ipsw and identify the ipsw
- After, redsn0w will prepare data required to jailbreak your device
- Redsn0w will ask you if you want to install Cydia or Icy or both or neither. Tick the box if you would like to install them or untick if not.
- After you got that done, redsn0w will ask you to turn off your device. (Press and hold down the power button on your device until you see the slide to power off screen and slide to shut down the device) *NOTE* Make sure your device is turned OFF and plugged IN
- Redsn0w will then guide you through entering your device into DFU mode
- Your device will then reboot then redsn0w will start uploading the jailbreak data onto your device
- Once redsn0w is uploading the data onto your device, you’re done! You will then notice images on your device, don’t touch the device till all the images are gone

but after i ran cydia to unlock the 3g iphone, it kept saying “reorganizing will automatically close when done”

You can’t brick your iPhone… you’d have to go through a ton to actually brick it.
Did you check the install icy option? That screwed up Cydia for me, but I redid the install and unchecked icy and that fixed Cydia for me.
what about the unlock …will the ultrasnow work on the new firmware
alright. i need help. i already have redsn0w. but the screen above indicates .72 and i have .80. and also the ipsw i have for 3.0 is iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. so according to this, the redsn0w AND ipsw that i’ve already downloaded is all i need, and all i have to do is re-jailbreak? or do i have to download another ipsw and redsn0w again? please help.
Yes just rejailbreak using the 3.0 ipsw not 3.0.1 and don’t mind the screenshot saying .72 use the latest redsn0w.
whoa wait a minute, i just went to the dev-team site and they’re indicating to update and restore to 3.0.1 and then go back and re-jailbreak using the 3.0 ipsw. i have a whole lot of stuff on the iphone thats not on my computer. i dont keep my songs on the mac. plus this is going to erase all the data that i’ve downloaded from cydia. am i reading their information wrong, or do we have to update then re-jailbreak?
Updating will not erase your songs. however, restoring will erase everything and you’ll start from scratch.
download a program called diskaid b4 u jailbreak, this shows every file on the iphone, for music its in itunes>music copu whole folder to desktop, for pictures the folders DCIM ull find apps etc there, once jailbroken again on 3.0.1 do some but putting back what u took away

Redsn0w stops working right when its about to start the jailbreak process. I put my phone in DFU mode and click next then Redsn0w errors and shuts down.
It works for me and I have 3G S thanks guys.

Simply unplug and then replug your USB cable. Things will proceed correctly.

Actually, it seems to get stuck at “waiting to reboot” no matter how long I hold down the Home button. I have tried following the countdown redsn0w prompts & also counting myself… still no white screen reboot. I am doing exactly what it says on this tutorial & tried following a video tutorial with no avail. Can anyone help me out?

Yes, the phone was off upon being prompted by redsn0w. I tried restoring 3 times and it was still freezing. Finally I read somewhere that if it freezes at the “waiting to reboot” point (like mine was) to unplug the USB & then plug it back into your computer, so I figured it couldn’t hurt. Guess what it worked! This unfroze it & I got the white screen & it finished jailbreaking my iPhone perfectly!

How long is it supposed to take to reboot? when i try to jail break it, the screen on redsn0w stays on waiting to reboot for the longest time.
If you are stuck in waiting for reboot, try un-connecting the cable from the iphone and then reconnecting.

Did you use Safari to download it? Use Firefox. Or tell Safari not to automatically open “safe” files un the preferences.

As long as you don’t restore without backing up, you should be fine. Just update with iTunes and jailbreak. Remember to back up.

I unlock my iphone 3G using redsn0w and iPhone1,2 3.0 restore.ipsw. I managed to unlock, but it has no cellular network service. Did I miss out something?
If you’re on T-Mobile, turn off 3G and make sure you have Ultrasn0w installed along with your carrier’s SIM card

ok i jail broke my iphone 3g about 2 months ago everything was working fine until i updated or upgraded my itunes. After i did that my phone was saying no service and it wasnt working. i tried rejailbreaking and unlocking now when i go to open cydia it wont open at all the icon is on the screen but it wont work can you please help me

Whenever i select it on the iphone, Cydia just shuts down and closes by itself. I need Cydia for Ultrasnow 0.9 in order to unlock my iPhone successfully. How can i unlock it successfully? I unchecked Icy when i jailbroke my iPhone. If i re-jailbreak and check Icy along with Cydia would it fix the problem? I’ve tried turning off 3G as well even if i’m not on Tmobile. and tried also rebooting it by holding the power button and home button at the same time, but still didn’t help. there are two iphone OS 3.0 files. The smaller one (230MB) worked for me, the bigger one (298MB) gave me the same crash as you. The exact filename of the one that worked for me is:
iPhone1,2_3.07A341_Restore.ipsw
I used redsnow 0.8 to jailbreak & then unlocked my phone using Ultrasnow & it all worked fine but then i realised i wasn’t receiving some incoming calls when i should have been so i thought i’d restore the phone & try again. (I did a friends & he can’t receive texts)
I used Itunes to restore it & then went thru the jailbreak again.
However i noticed that Cydia was still on my phone & when i tried to open it it crashed to normal screen.
I retored it agin & the same happened. I tried redsnow 7.2 & Cydia still crashes.
So now i have a jailbroken phone with Cydia on but Cydia doen’t work so i can’t unlock it.

I realise that everything will be lost in the restore but is this permenant or will I be able to get my numbers back when the frimware is installed?

I think Redsn0w is not working or hasnt any effect. I used for my iPhone 2G and for my 3G every time QickPWN every time and could jailbreak my iPhones without any problem. But since I use 3.0 firmware on my iPhone 3G I was waiting for proper solution to jailbreak it. The only program is the redsn0w or yellosn0w but they don’t make any changes. I wanted to install cracked applications like iLightr and so on. I had no problem with my iPhone 2G. But if I install the same application (like I did before with iPhone 3G 2.1 or 2.2 jailbroken) iTunes doesn’t wanna install the applications which are not purchased and shows this message:

Hello, I actually followed the guide and ran into no problems but as soon as the process was finished, I turned on my phone and I don’t see Cydia. This is the only part I don’t understand. I’m assuming Cydia should be installed and I should see it on my phone when this is all done right? I was just wondering if anyone else ran into this issue. I think I’m missing something, or for some reason Cydia isn’t installing. Any tips appreciated. Thanks!

I’m having the exact same problem. I follow the on screen instructions exactly and everything seems to work but when I turn my 3GS back on nothing seems to have changed no Cydia or Icy. I’m using iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw as stated but nothing happens.
Can someone please tell me where I am going wrong before I pull what little hair I have left out.

I actually haven’t. I tried re-jail-breaking a few times afterward but still had no luck. After I turned my phone back on I didn’t see Cydia or anything and basically nothing changed. It looked like the software had no effect whatsoever. During the process the screen on my phone actually said it was downloading and installing the software but nothing happened. I may try to do it again soon but if still doesn’t work I’ll either just not jailbreak it or I’ll try somewhere else :D
Either way I’ll keep you updated.

Got Cydia and everything.
My ipod gets stuck @ “Downloading Jailbreak Data” – redsn0w completes its cycle and ipod stays @ “Downloading Jailbreak Data” and then goes to plug into itunes screen

i got stuck on the reboot, i was using iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw,
so i switch to iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw, and that did the trick, rebooted instantly.
