Wow, a day after the iPhone Dev Team released their updated Redsn0w software, Apple releases an update to iPhone OS. This isn’t a significant update to the iPhone OS. It doesn’t introduce new and exciting features to the current hardware but it does fix a number of issues and bugs.

Apple iPhone OS 3.1.3 Update

This update fixes and improves the following:

  • Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
  • Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances
  • Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

This update is for all current hardware, iPhone 1G (EDGE), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and all iPod Touch devices. You can easily get the update via iTunes by connecting your device and clicking “Check for Update”

*Note* It’s been confirmed by the iPhone Dev Team that Redsn0w 0.9.2 works with this new iPhone OS update only with iPhone 1G (EDGE) and iPhone 3G and *ONLY* if you don’t care about unlocking. Just point Redsn0w 0.9.2 to the iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware IPSW — The iPhone Dev Team urges iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch users who wish to jailbreak to stay away from this update until further notice!

iPhone OS 3.1.3 Downloads will be up shortly!

In a brief press release by RadioShack earlier this week, RadioShack announced they will begin selling Apple’s iPhone starting with the Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City markets later this month. RadioShack plans to sell the iPhone across the U.S. in 2010.

“As part of its ongoing mobility strategy, RadioShack is pleased to announce that it will introduce Apple’s iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a limited number of company-owned stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City metropolitan areas beginning later this month. RadioShack expects to introduce iPhone in stores nationwide in 2010. For more information about exact store locations and product availability, visit www.radioshack.com. For more information about iPhone, visit www.apple.com/iphone.”

Turns out BGR was right, Last year The Boy Genius Report reported that Best Buy and Radio Shack would begin selling the iPhone. Best Buy began selling the iPhone in September 2008.

GeoHot has released a free unlock for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS called blacksn0w. You can install blacksn0w from the blackra1n application installed on your iPhone when jailbreaking with blackra1n. You can also install blacksn0w from Cydia by adding blackra1n.com to the Cydia source list.

blacksn0w is a free unlock for the latest iPhone 3G and 3GS

blacksn0w is also available on Cydia, add blackra1n.com as repo
requires firmware >= 3.1 and baseband 05.11.07

If you happen to use blacksn0w and run into Wi-Fi issues, GeoHot suggests you try to Reset Network Settings in Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings.

It’s about time! AT&T has announced in a press release that MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) will be finally coming to the iPhone on September 25 2009 for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS customers, on the AT&T Network of course. Sadly, no iPhone 2G (First Generation) MMS support due to hardware limitations.

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

Many iPhone customers on the AT&T network have been waiting for AT&T for the past four months since Apple announced it back in June 09. The MMS service will not be an extra paid service, it will be free to existing iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS customers with text messaging. So, in other words, everyone with an iPhone on AT&T (except iPhone 2G owners) will have MMS for free.

Boy Genius Report has received tips that Rogers Wireless, Apple’s Canadian iPhone carrier, is in the process of shipping an 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS to its retail stores. BGR has also received pictures of what appear to be an internal memo in Rogers’ retail computer system announcing the transition to the new model to staff members.

We’ve had a number of unconfirmed tips over the last few days about this so we figured we’d post it… apparently it seems that Rogers in Canada is in the process of shipping iPhone 3GS 8GB flavor handsets to stores. Again, unconfirmed, no idea on pricing (we have no clue where to start on that) but we felt it was newsworthy to at least let you guys know what we’re hearing.

Rogers iPhone 3GS 8GB

According to the photos, it seems Rogers well sell it’s inventory of 8 GB iPhone 3G before transitioning to the iPhone 3GS as a replacement at the 8 GB level. This will be a very aggressive move if it stays at the current $99USD.

The iPhone Dev Team has pushed out a great update for their IPhone 3G and 3GS unlocking tool, ultrasn0w. This update fixes a bunch of little bugs here and there.

Features:

  • Works on both 3G and 3GS
  • Works on hacktivated devices
  • Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device
  • Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).
  • Doesn’t install any additional daemon
  • Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
  • Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :)
  • Is available now via Cydia. Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that’s ultrasn0w with a zero!)

If you haven’t yet updated to ultrasn0w 0.9 then we highly suggest you do! So fire up cydia and update that puppy!

Yeah! iPhone Dev Team to the rescue, yet once again with the release of redsn0w version 0.8! This new version of redsn0w now works with the iPhone 3G S. Yep, so if you didn’t want to use purplera1n for whatever reason, then you can now use iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w!

From the Dev Team:

ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilant against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version). Apple has gotten very serious with the latest baseband — they’ve removed 180 (!) commands in an effort to cut down their exposure to holes. So please always stay away from stock Apple IPSWs and instead use our tools as we release them. These tools let you update your firmware without updating your baseband.

If you’re a Linux user and had to use a Windows machine or a Mac machine to jailbreak your iPhone, then you may be very pleased to know that redsn0w is finally available for Linux!

Since Redsn0w version 0.8 has the same user interface as it’s previous version, the tutorial we posted a few days ago will be exactly the same for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS aswell as iPod Touch’s.

And if you want to unlock using ultrasn0w, then read this tutorial

Download Redsn0w 0.8 from our iPhone Downloads section:
Redsn0w 0.8 for Windows
Redsn0w 0.8 for Mac OS X
Redsn0w 0.8 for Linux

Can’t wait for the iPhone Dev Team to update their tools for the iPhone 3GS? Well, George Hotz (aka Geohot) has released a very simple application called purplera1n to jailbreak your iPhone 3G S! Both Mac OS X and the Windows application have very similar interfaces so this tutorial will work for both operating systems (Windows is being used in this tutorial). Before we begin, some important notes worth mentioning:

  • This one is only for iPhone 3GS users. iPhone and iPhone 3G users use this tutorial
  • Make sure you’re running firmware 3.0 (If you’re not sure then you most likely do have iPhone OS 3.0)
  • Jailbreak apps like WinterBoard, VOiPOver3G etc don’t seem to be working on iPhone 3GS, so you might have to wait for the developers to release updated version of the jailbreak apps
  • Use at your own risk. Please pre-read before attempting anything so you know what you’re getting yourself into ahead of time.
    Lets begin:

  1. Download purplera1n HERE – for Mac OS X or HERE – for Windows
  2. Once you have it downloaded, double click the .exe that you downloaded (if on Windows). If on Mac OS X double click the .zip and it should unzip and then double click the purplera1n.app icon to launch the application.
  3. (more…)

If you have a white iPhone 3G S then you may have possibly noticed that the back of your iPhone 3GS is kinda brownish or pinkish. Many reports claim this is due to overheating, but a new report from frenchiPhone claims this isn’t a overheating problem but the discoloration is due to contact with some third-party cases. The discoloration reportedly can be removed by wiping the back of the iPhone with alcohol. (Attempt at your own risk)

After numerous calls to Apple technical service and maintenance of contact with a level 3 (engineer) the problem seems to come not from a hot 3GS but contact with some covers! This was evident by ourselves on a device with a small sticker (a warning not to listen to music too loud) remained stuck, part of the hull below remained white.
A simple solution to the problem is to clean the back of the iPhone with alcohol, tested by myself I can confirm that it works and reassure you it is safe for your precious

No details have yet been revealed on which 3rd party cases may be responsible for the discoloration of your precious device.

Yep, The iPhone Dev Team have done it again! They have successfully unlocked and jailbroken the iPhone 3G S. But, unfortunately, they do not have an announced release date but will most likely be released after iPhone OS 3.1 is released by Apple.

From iPhone Dev Team’s blog:

Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.

The iPhone Dev Team urge you not to update to iPhone OS 3.1 if you want to be able to unlock your iPhone 3G S. You have been warned!
