It’s about time, isn’t it? It’s been a few months since we showed you SlingMedia demoing Slingplayer Mobile, then SlingMedia submits the app for approval. Two months later, here we are, Slingplayer for iPhone is available on the AppStore.

SlingMedia - Slingplayer for iPhone

SlingPlayer Mobile allows you to watch and control your home TV and DVR from your iPhone and iPod touch. This is accomplished by using one of SlingMedia’s media devices. Ah, but there’s a gotcha as usual, due to concerns about network congestion, the application will only stream video over Wi-Fi connections and does not support 3G or EDGE.

SlingPlayer Mobile costs a whopping $29.99 and it’s available at the AppStore (iTunes Link)

Well, with the outbreak of the swine flu the folks at IntuApps have responding to this pandemic by building an app. The soon-to-be-available app Swine Flu Tracker for iPhone and iPod Touch will do 3 things. First, it will display the current threat level determined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Secondly, It will do something that only an iPhone/iPod Touch can do really really well - it drops pins onto Google maps to represent confirmed or suspected cases, nifty ain’t it? Last but absolutely not least, it tracks and reports on Swine Flu news from around the world. You might find Swine Flu Tracker useful if you’re traveling or just generally concerned about this somewhat scary problem.

Swine Flu Tracker iPhone App

Seeing as it isn’t live yet, we at iPhone-hacks haven’t tested it and can’t report on its performance. Hopefully, Apple wont keep us waiting too long.

In a brief note on SlingMedia’s website, the company notes the following: “We are in close contact with our partners at Apple and are optimistic that it will be approved soon. We hope the wait won’t be much longer.” SlingMedia had demoed SlingPlayer in action at Macworld and then a few months after that, SlingMedia submitted Slingplayer for iPhone for approval to the AppStore.

Since then, it’s been months of excitement and anticipation followed by the gruesome depression as lightly sourced rumors arise saying that Apple may turn down SlingPlayer for iPhone at the request of AT&T, who are worried about all bandwidth the app may use up. Of course, AT&T and other carriers do offer phones that the SlingMedia Mobile app works on but of course those phones will never come close to the footprint the iPhone has made. Hopefully, SlingMedia knows something that the rest of use don’t.

There have also been rumors that Slingplayer for iPhone will turn out to be Wi-Fi only which will be a huge downer for those who will be expecting to start Slinging away where ever they might be. Hopefully it won’t be wi-fi only, who knows.

Stay tuned!

This is perhaps my new favorite and most used iPhone app in my iPhone App inventory. Rowmote, it’s a remote control for your mac. It’s just like the remote control Apple ships with all macs with an IR receiver but what if your mac doesn’t have an IR receiver? Well, for rowmote you don’t need an IR receiver since it uses your local network. Pretty damn sweet application. Works freaking awesome with my Hack Pro - Mac Pro Intel Core i7 clone, not to brag ;).

With rowmote, you can control almost everything you can with the standard Apple remote - Stuff such as, Frontrow, iTunes, iPhoto, QuickTime, DVD Player and a bunch of other cool Mac OS X applications. Just sporting 6 buttons, (Next, Previous, Volume up and down, pause/play, and menu) Rowmote has an extremely simple and beautifully designed interface that is such an ease to operate. Hell, you can even operate it like a real remote! Holding down the next button, for example, will fast forward the song you’re listening to! Now, how cool is that?!

From rowmote’s website:

On one side, Rowmote is just like your Mac’s remote control but over the wireless network. On the flip side, by tapping the Apps button, you get bonus abilities, switching between most controlled programs and toggling the iTunes Visualizer. Rowmote controls Front Row, Airfoil Video, Boxee, iPhoto, iTunes, Quicktime, DVD Player, Keynote ’08 and ‘09, PandoraJam, Plex, Powerpoint 2008, Skim, Spotify, and VLC. Rowmote 1.3+ also has preliminary eyeTV support (channel changing and volume control). Rowmote can even sleep and wake your computer!

Rowmote has definitely made my list of best iPhone app ever created! I personally tip my hat to the developer!

Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4.0 or later (Sorry Windows folks)
  • The free Rowmote Helper program must be running on the Mac to be controlled.

Downloads:
You can download the Remote Helper app from either us on our iPhone Downloads section (Link below) or from the Rowmote’s website at the source link.

Rowmote (iTunes Link) is a steal at $0.99USD and should be on every Mac user’s iPhone!

It’s official, Skype for iPhone will be made available on Tuesday. While many other apps such as Fring support Skype but with not so good quality. Often many Apps that support skype are echo-infected. The official Skype for iPhone app will only support WiFi - no EDGE or 3G support (You could always get it to work over EDGE or 3G with some iPhone Hacks)

Skype for iPhone also supports calls to SkypeOut contacts in addition to many of the other features you’ve used from the desktop client. iPod touch owners will require earphones with an embedded mic to talk.

Perhaps one of the best instant messaging clients in the AppStore and perhaps one of the most expensive instant messaging clients in the AppStore just released a nice update to BeejiveIM — Support for custom background images and support for Facebook IM. Along with those nice implementations they have taken anti-piracy measures so the application isn’t wildly cracked and distributed illegally.

The new version of BeejiveIM includes:

  • Support for Facebook IM, including the ability to login from multiple locations, update your buddy picture and update your Facebook status.
  • Wallpaper selection inside the application. Ability to select your own wallpaper.
  • Performance enhancements.
  • Small UI enhancements.

The good folks of Beejive have told MobileCrunch:

We have recently implemented new anti-piracy measures in BeejiveIM for iPhone. We have tried to keep our approach fun with an error message and a video. But we hope our message is clear: please respect the work of developers.

If you happen to pirate BeejiveIM then the following screenshot may look familiar to you:

BeejiveIM PC LOAD LETTER Error

You’ll see that error and be taken to a Office Space YouTube video.

If you did pirate BeejiveIM, then buy a legit copy. It’s very expensive for a IM client but its worth every cent if you’re a heavy IM user.

Despite Amazon having a Kindle and recently releasing Kindle 2, they released a free Kindle application for the iPhone! Yay, that’s great news for those that can’t afford a Kindle or for those who don’t want a Kindle for whatever reason. You can get that Kindle experience everyone loves right on your iPhone — No kindle required!

From Amazon:

Kindle for iPhone allows Apple iPhone and iPod touch owners to read Kindle books using a simple, easy-to-use interface. You can shop for hundreds of thousands of books at www.amazon.com/kindlestore, and wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone or iPod touch. Enjoy Amazon’s low prices on Kindle books, including New York Times Best Sellers and most new releases for $9.99, unless marked otherwise.

With Kindle for iPhone, you can:

  • Buy a Kindle book from your Mac, PC, or iPhone using a Web browser and wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone
  • Read first chapters of any book for free before you buy
  • Download the Kindle books you already own for free — they are automatically backed up on Amazon.com
  • Adjust the text size, add bookmarks, and view the annotations you created on your Kindle device

Kindle for iPhone also includes Whispersync, which allows you to seamlessly switch back and forth between your Kindle device and Kindle for iPhone while keeping your bookmarks and reading location synchronized between devices. Now you can easily pick up reading right where you left off on your Kindle or iPhone.
Books you purchase can also be read on Kindle and Kindle 2, Amazon’s portable readers that wirelessly download books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs to a crisp, high-resolution 6-inch electronic-paper display that looks and reads like real paper.

Being able to read the first chapter is a huge deal for a lot of people, usually. It’s basically like watching the pilot of a TV show series - If you don’t like the pilot, you most likely will not like the rest of the series. Also, being able to re-download books you previously purchase is f@#$ing awesome!
