Qik isn’t the newest news but I just tried out for the first time today. I must say I was impressed. Qik is a homebrew 3rd party native App that can be install via Cydia under the ‘Multimedia’ category. It ties in with their free video web service that you need to register for. The registration was pretty quick and painless but did involve sending a SMS message to my iPhone. There was an option to not have to do this but I didn’t bother following that route opting for quickly clicking on the link in the SMS message to tie my iPhone to my Qik account.

Once all this is done the fun begins, all you do is open Qik press record and it will start streaming live audio and video from your iPhone to your Qik account where it can be viewed from anywhere in the world. You can obviously select whether a video is publicly viewable or not.

From my iPhone:

If you’re someone that cares about bandwidth costs, maybe because you live in Canada (F@#! YOU ROGERS!) Then you might want to make sure you’re using WiFi or 3G and not EDGE. This could result in a hefty bill at the end of the month. Quite the price to pay for trying to stream live footage of your cat on to the net.

Recently rumors of the iPhone phoning home to Apple and reporting back on what you’ve done to your iPhone have been swirling around the blogosphere. All these rumors started with one little vague comment from Zdziarski which he wants to set the record straight about.

Zdziarski found that the iPhone 2.0’s GPS program fetches a blacklist for Apps from Apple’s servers at the following host ‘iphone-services.apple.com’ and stores the list in a cache file located in ‘/var/root/Library/Caches/locationd/’. This has now been confirmed by Apple’s famed CEO Steve Jobs in a recent Wall Street Journal article (Google News link so you can read the whole article) when asked about the existence of an App kill switch Jobs responded “Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull,”

Zdziarski successfully tested the use of the blacklist by killing some of his Apps.

With a little DNS spoofing, I fed my own list into the iPhone and effectively killed (by name) applications that attempt to use the GPS. It looks like that’s all it’s set to do right now, but I may just not have found the “vaporize” switch.

Two videos have recently been uploaded at youtube in response to one another, showing some of the iPhone’s military applications. The first video below is a genuine iPhone hack it shows use of a native iPhone App controlling an iRobot PackBot. What’s a PackBot you ask? iRobot describes them as robots for “Helping warfighters and first responders tackle dangerous missions”.

This fully featured remote control program uses streaming POV video and a direct WiFi connection to the PackBot. Authors of the software Rodrigo Guiterrez and Jeff Craighead of South Florida University claim that next up they plan to utilize the phone’s accelerometers and a full screen video display to deliver a “you are there” experience for bot-steering.

The second video isn’t so much an iPhone hack because it uses a web app and could be achieved using most mobile browsing devices these days. But they did choose the iPhone to program their remote controlled UAV fly over reconnaissance mission.

RF.com’s nifty RingFree is a way that you can make VoIP calls on any iPhone, hacked or not. The currently free beta web application uses Safari and AJAX to accomplish the task. Readying your iPhone for use with RingFree is very easy to do and just involves double checking some of your settings through the standard iPhone interface.

RingFree on iPhone Screenshot

The following VoIP service providers have been tested with RingFree:

  • Gizmo Project: No limits.
  • PhoneGnome: No limits.
  • Race Technology: No limits.
  • VoicePulse: VoicePulse Access and VoicePulse Connect plans work well with RingFree. The company does not share credentials on its unlimited calling plans.
  • Vonage: Only their “soft-phone” product, for which they charge $5 month in addition to their standard monthly service fees.
  • Voxalot: No limits.

If you don’t have a VoIP provider never fear you can also use MSN, Yahoo, Skype, GoogleTalk, FWD, SIP URI or your own PBX.

RingFree is currently a free service as they are attempting to monetize it by selling their software to VoIP service providers. Hopefully it will remain free forever.

  • Auto-Checks Email when you view the unlock screen - no need to “Refresh” from Mail.app or wait 15 minutes

  • Precise International Weather (by zip) provided by Weather Underground.com
  • News Feeds include Yahoo!, CNN, Fox News, and Reuters (more coming soon!)

MythTV iPhone Screenshot Introducing another awesome [web] app — Chris Carey’s MythTV for the iPhone! Stream recorded TV directly from your MythTV DVR to your iPhone using Mobile Safari.

MythTV for iPhone allows you to watch your TV shows on your MythTV DVR on your iPhone.

The software combines the work of many great programmers into one application. It allows you to browse your recorded shows, and look at show details. You can stream any recorded show to the iPhone wirelessly. It allows you to control your other (PC based) MythFrontend with a web-based remote control.

The technology behind it is MythTV (The Open-Source DVR), PHP for the backend, Smarty and iUI for the frontend.

You can find a demo here; using the iPhone’s web browser, of course.

Installation guide.

At last — copy & paste support for Mobile Safari!

Preston’s iCopy is installed as a bookmark utilizing JavaScript to enable copy/paste between websites. Before using iCopy, please make yourself aware of the pros and cons listed below. Namely the copying & pasting of sensitive data is a big no no; iCopy sends pasted text across the Internet in order to function properly. Nonetheless, awesome work.

Demonstration video:

Pros:

  • You can copy and paste almost any text on the page.
  • You can email a friend a great web page you found. Emailed text retains its HTML formatting including absolute links and images.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t work with every page (mostly pages with frames).
  • When pasting it is required to reload the page.
  • The text you paste is added to the URL and sent across the Internet. This is VERY INSECURE so be sure not to copy and paste important private information.

To install iCopy — follow the instructions here.

You gotta check this out… iTransmogrify!

The iTransmogrify! bookmarklet recognizes and converts a variety of embedded Flash content from web pages so they will play on iPhone.

To install: drag this link to your browser bookmarks, then sync with your iPhone. Should you come across a broken YouTube video or flash-based MP3 player in Mobile Safari, just select the bookmark and there it is! That simple.
