Update: The iPhone Dev Team have updated Redsn0w to 0.7.2 - Download the newest version from our iPhone Downloads section:
redsn0w 0.7.2 for Mac OS X download
redsn0w 0.7.2 for Windows download

iPhone Dev Team has released an application that works similar to quickpwn and provides similar functionality. Redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Luckily for Windows users, who couldn’t use PwnageTool, Redsn0w is available for both Windows and Mac OS X users. However, iPhone Dev Team notes that there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC and they suggest you use an Intel Mac till these issues are resolved.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  6. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  7. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

Redsn0w is easy to use, simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

*Note*: there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac while the iPhone Dev Team fixes these issues

Our very own NurkJon has released a really handy application for Windows named iUSB Tunnel. iUSB Tunnel makes it truly simple to SSH to your iPhone, tether to your iPhone, and to do many other things all with a simple user-friendly GUI.

iUSB Tunnel

iUSB Tunnel is a simple gui that makes it easy to use SSH, VNC and Tethering with your iPhone over usb on a Windows machine. It’s a free liteweight program and portable so you can run it from a usb stick if you want. It comes loaded with WinSCP, Putty, Firefox Portable, iTunnel, TightVNC and UltraVNC so you don’t have to download those programs.

I haven’t had a chance to test this out myself, but I thank NurkJon for releasing this on our own forums and for all of his hard work!

If you would like to give this a shot, you can download it via our iPhone Downloads section or you may download it from the source link.

‘Bout time, right? RipDev have released InstallerApp for Windows. It took longer than they expected but the only thing that matters is that it’s finally out. If you don’t know what InstallerApp is, it’s a desktop application to install Apple Unapproved 3rd Party applications onto your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch via USB. Both Cydia repositories and Installer repositories are supported, so that’s a plus.

InstallerApp works on anything from XP to Windows 7, so which ever version of Windows you’re using you should be good! InstallerApp requires iTunes so make sure you have that installed before hand.

InstallerApp license costs $7USD and the license ties to the devices so it works regardless on which platform you use it on.

RipDev has announced an upcoming application named InstallerApp — InstallerApp will allow users to install jailbreak unofficial third-party application via a desktop application. It will look similar to Installer.app on the iPhone but it will be on your desktop. You will be able to view and download applications from Installer and Cydia (yay!) repositories and then sync them to your iPhone via USB. Pretty awesome for those who don’t have Wi-Fi or cell network access.

InstallerApp

Once you download the app, it will be kept on your hard drive (unless, of course you delete it) and just like iTunes, InstallerApp will notify you when there are updates for application you’ve downloaded. InstallerApp is still in beta testing and version 1.0 will be released very soon!
Pretty awesome idea!
What do you guys think? Will you be using this often when it releases? Let us know!

If you’re are familiar with TextExpander or TypeIt4Me on the Mac then TapIt4Me is very similar. If you aren’t familiar with TextExpander or TypeIt4Me they are utilities to save time while typing or to correct a word you misspell frequently. For example, you can type “homeaddress” and as soon as you finish typing that, TextExpander or TypeIt4Me will replace “homeaddress” with your home address - makes it faster and easier for you. Ettore Software has brought the same concept of TextExpander and TypeIt4Me to the iPhone with Tapit4Me! TapIt4Me makes it easier to type on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

TapIt4Me - making typing on iPhone a tad more bearable!
Based on TypeIt4Me, the original text expander on Mac since 1989.

Unfortunately, this only works in Mail.app and Notes.app. — You actually compose the email right within TapIt4Me and after you finish composing it, select Mail from the menu and send it.
To reply to an email, click reply in Apple’s Mail app then press the home button and launch TapIt4Me. When your reply is ready, select Mail from the action menu. your reply will appear right where it should go in Apple’s Mail app ready for you to tap send.

TapIt4Me works in landscape mode for extra comfort. TapIt4Me also allows you to import snippets from TextExpander and TypeIt4Me.

TapIt4Me is $4.99USD and you can grab it in the AppStore

w00t. that’s right! iPhone Dev Team has released an updated version of PwnageTool and Quickpwn with added support for iPhone firmware 2.2.1 - which was recently released by Apple a few days ago - if you have an iPhone 3G and you need yellowsn0w, use pwnagetool to create an ipsw that won’t upgrade the baseband to be able to continue using yellowsn0w. The iPod Touch 2G is still not supported - but, redsn0w is still being actively researched and developed.

From iPhone Dev Team’s Blog:

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
  2. Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. These apps are suitable for the recent 2.2.1 release.
  6. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.
  7. Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly, please see the note towards the end of this post to easily fix this issue.

  • Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn to do the magic, ‘nuff said.
