Hello all, name is Dominic, hope to get well acquainted with all the resources here on iphone-hacks.com
I've been a fan of Gizmodo.com and always reading about the headline blurbs of iPhone unlocking. But i'm not sure what that really means in detail. Does that mean iPhone unlocking in terms of carriers on other 3G networks such as T-Mobile?
I'm looking to purchase the iPhone 3G, but I want to know what the benefits there are to hacking it, in laymen terms.
Thanks all! ![]()

Well unlocking simply means being able to use it on any carrier you want. You can't unlock a 3G right now so if you need to unlock it to use it with your carrier then wait, it will happen it's just a matter of time before the iPhone 3G is unlocked.
The other big 'Hack' is jailbreaking your iPhone this CAN be done on a 3G. Jailbreaking means you've broken the iPhone out of the virtual jail that Apple put's them in when they ship to their stores. Once you've jailbroken your iPhone you'll be able to access it directly without iTunes, and most importantly you'll be able to install all the 3rd party applications that Apple doesn't allow.

Thank you for the reply!
I think where things seem a bit cloudy is how this would be able to work on any carrier (one that only supports 3G/GSM i'm assuming). Possibly what could be throwing me off is this is somehow due to the fact it uses SIM cards (these don't exist on Verizon CDMA/EVDO networks which i'm use to).
so let's pretend i was getting a 1st generation iPhone, that i could hack on any network. What are the benefits? could i get a cheaper rate if I went with T-Mobile and just used the Wi-fi on hotspots?

No no no, not at all. Because a WiFi spot uses the WiFi connection, not the 3G, which is more like an upgraded EDGE network, know what am saying?
And bout the carriers, I think I read somewhere here that you can use the 3G iPhone on non-3G carriers, but you wont be able to use its 3G capabilities, which is one of its main features. But am not sure about that entire.. SIM-less carrier thing. Sorry bout that.

Pardon if i may be confuse things, just trying to clear the air...
Trying to see the logic into going to alternate carriers or rather unlocking it but still using AT&T as the carrier. When you unlock the first generation iPhone, can you AVOID the data plan, go with a normal minute plan, and when you run into a hotspot just use the wifi (which i understand is separate from the 3G network?).
When you say you can use this on non-3G networks, are you implying that i could use this on a Verizon CDMA/EVDO network as a normal phone carrier?
I'm just trying to understand the logic of how i would initiate service to the phone after it's been hacked.
"Yes, i'd like the base plan with no data on this please" lol. hope you can see the missing gaps that i see.

Well, am not in the US so I dunno, but the thing is for people like me, as I didnt get it from ANY carrier. Dont ask me how I got it cuz I dunno. But either way do you HAVE to get the Data Plan to get the iPhone from em?
Cuz you can easily install a little App (via Installer) to add the option to toggle EDGE/3G on and off. Each has its own app.
And I have no idea about Verizon because you told me they dont use SIM cards, so I dont know if you can use them with Verizon. Ask them. Seriously. Just go up to em and ask them if their network is iPhone-Compatible.
Initiating the service, after you JAU it, you pop the SIM in and turn it on and start calling. xD!
Now I hope I was able to fill those gaps, or even partially at the time. Lol.
But yo, I'd prefer asking for a spicy burger with no onions and a slice of cheese and fries and a drink, though. Seriously. ... ![]()
