There is another post called "Is there a service?" which chronicles my, admittedly inept, attempts at updating my iphone.

Is there anyone out there who I can contact via phone to walk me through bringing my phone back to life preferably to V2. Happy to pay you for your expertise

well it depends where you are... i could help you but i'm all the way in Kenya so.... dude its not that hard restoring just follow the tut and you should manage though if you wana call its up to you...

I wish I could agree. My phone is stuck with a yellow triangle saying connect to iTunes which I've done (again). Itunes just says "Verifying IPhone Software"

Can you shut your phone on/off? You need to get it back into DFU mode, if it comes up with the triangle then you most likely missed your timing on booting into DFU mode.

yeah try getting it into dfu mode than restore the iphone again....

I have tried the DFU sequence again and get the same result; yellow triangle saying connect to iTunes

than your timing was wrong keep trying you must have a blank black screen when the iphone is in dfu mod....

I did get a blank screen. I ran the Quick software. It ultimately says connect to itunes to restore. The restore runs for a long time and then says "verifying software" while the phone has the triangle

I really wish there was someone in the Boston area I could take this thing to

i think you should try bring it up to 1.1.4 then FW 2.x but follow what killer says....
