Yes and No.
Pwnage actually creates a seperate custom IPSW (you choose where to save it) and then you restore that IPSW through a pwned iTunes.
QuickPwn does not create a seperate IPSW, and the original IPSW you use in QuickPwn stays the same after it's done. QuickPwn alters your existing firmware already on your phone live through DFU recovery mode, it doesn't replace/restore it.
And yes, both QuickPwn and Pwnage jailbreak the phone ... but QuickPwn only jailbreaks an *existing* firmware, it doesn't update or restore your phone.

I live in China, where the iPhone is assembled and where the Gevey 3G chip comes from. There is also no legit iPhone in China, yet. I know the Gevey is being sold internationally, and so maybe my problem is repeated elsewhere. And probably Gevey is copied from the guy who built it, who isnt Chinese, so compounding the problem.
The original iPhone hardware hacks work, although you are right, I should have have waited for a software hack. (My iPhone 2g was swiped 2 weeks ago and my backup, 40US Nokia put me back in the stone-age). I can receive/make calls/text. I am surprised the Gevey dupes my phone, but doesnt dupe iTunes store.

I used Pwnage to put v2 on my old iPhone. But there was always a sync button in iTunes to load the new custom firmware. Now I have no sync / tabs at all.
If I put iPhone 3G into DFU, will there be a sync button in iTunes that will allow me to load pwnage built firmware compatible with my China Mobile / Gevey chip onto the phone. (John1004 only succeeded after he ran Pwnage with the new SIM). Or should I just have a go and see?
Or should I just go with rebelsim or furiousim and try my luck with them?

You can't unlock 3G phones yet, at least not with software.
You can update a 2G phone to 2.x firmware, and unlock ... but 3G's can only be jailbroken.
