I have been using various hacks throughout the years, mostly on PSP but have never used any ipod hacks whatsoever.
So I would like to know, what are the pros and cons of hacking a 3G?
What kind of homebrew is available?
Emulators?
Risks taken?
What if my phone screws up, is there a recovery?
Then there is also a few things I'd like to know about the phone itself.
What features would cost you extra on your network?
Can you use just wifi to access the internet?
How good is the camera?
Any neat points about it anyone would be willing to tell me about would be nice too.
Thanks everyone in advance ![]()
Looking forward to possibly getting myself a new phone
EDIT:
Oh yes, I'm also on Rogers if it makes any difference
And this isn't in the help forum since I saw it as more of an inquiry rather than a
problem I need help with

There are no cons, none that I know of at least. Only that you void your warranty but that's all really.
Homebrew varies from custom themes, phone mods
There are only 2 emulators since you come from the psp world, snes and gamboy.
There is a psx emulator.
Of course there's a recovery mode.
The data plan costs an extra few bucks and text too if you plan on that.
Yes you can use wifi but, goodluck finding a wifi network wherever you go that is not secured.
The camera takes very good pictures for being 2.0 megapixel camera. Portrait and landscape.
We can now record video on an iPhone!
Nope, doesnt make a difference.

And just so you can be sure my PSP-Hacking friend, the iPhone is almost NON-Brickable. Unlike the PSP until the Recovery Menus and Pandora batteries came out. The iPhone is almost ALWAYS "restorable". ![]()

I'd be careful using Rogers. I'm with them too, and they have done some freaky things for me. Charging me for visual voicemail when I SPECIFICALLY asked them not to, and trying to tell me I used 4MB of data in one day... which is impossible because I blocked my EDGE connection with BossPrefs ![]()
I see no cons to hacking the iPhone. And there are a LOT of unprotected WiFi hotspots in Toronto... if I had to take a guess I'd say you're in the GTA. And really, you don't really need 3G on the go unless you're a businessperson who relies on email and web browsing at any given minute.
Those are my opinions

Franny, what do you mean theres 2 emulators, snes and gameboy
and psx
Is psx in development or is it finished?
Also I wanted to know about the wifi since I won't be using just anywhere.
I'll very rarely use the internet on it, I was just wondering if the option was there since I don't want to pay extra for internet service.
nedthehead, yes i pay close attention to my bill, check it over every month. I'm in BC, and there seems to be alot of hotspots I find to remote play my ps3's videos over ![]()
One more thing I would like to know though, if for some reason I had to return it, Could I completely erase all the
evidence that my iphone had been hacked?
Thanks for all the input everyone, its making me lean further and further toward getting an iphone:)
EDIT:
Also, are there any really cool applications that stand out for the iphone?
Like the infrared remote for psp, something cool and unique

Mind if I answer all or most of those? ![]()
She meant all of those emulators are available on the iPhone. But dont get your hopes up too much and start comparing it to the PSP. And just to be fair, I only tried the GBA emulator since it was the only thing I found easy and actually usable on the iPhone. It wasnt that great. Trust me. If you tried using a GBA emulator on a PSP or a PC you'll know what am saying when it comes to the quality and ease-of-use.
Yes, you can via process called Virginizing. There is another process as well after it but I forgot its name. Killa always had to remind me. xD
Anyhow, when you use it, you'll phone will be as OTB (Out of the box).
Yea there are lots of cool apps but most of them (That I know and tried) are not yet available on the 2.0 iPhones. And since your getting a 3G most likely there'd be no way to downgrade it to 1.1.4 due to hardware and software differences and incompatibilities.
Just wait a bit and hopefully most apps will be ported to 2.0.
Hope that helped and your welcome.
OH! And welcome to the forum!! Hope to see you round fellow future-iPhone-user. xD!

haha thanks, and im sure stuff will get ported.
They almost always do.
Just for curiosity's sake, what apps are available on v1 iphones but not yet on 2.0?
I like to have as much information as I can before making purchases or getting into something
complicated like modding.
I watched some reviews on youtube, but they were kinda old and said you could not film video
on the iphone, which i found out here is apparently now available ![]()
That would have been a very big negative point for me, as my current W800i (an awesome phone btw)
can do video and pictures, with things like panorama shots and 3x quick photo

Well, as I see it now, most things (major anyways) have already been ported to 2.X. Even Installer has, but the sources which bring you different 3rd Party Applications need to be refreshed and updated. And yes, we have apps like Cycorder and Snapture, which do record videos.... you need to Jailbreak your iPhone to get those apps, but I think you're going to do that anyways ![]()
I don't like using this term, but the 1G iPhone is pretty much obsolete. There is NO advantage to getting a 1G iPhone right now.
2 other things:
1: Unique things? If you end up on 2.X firmware, you can install cracked applications onto your iPhone. Basically, you don't have to pay for anything in the App Store. Not the most legal thing to do, but alls I'm saying is it can be done. I mean, some of the games are totally unique. Try Spore, where you have to move around with the accelerometer: IE: By titling your iPhone. Or Racing games where you use the phone like a sterring wheel.
2: What I do is block my EDGE and 3G. This way I will never use any data on the go, and I can only use internet in WiFi hotspots. For your usages, it sounds like that might be the best idea.
And with Rogers, as much as they will force you, you can always decline a data package, but you have to watch out, because they charge something insane (like 5 cents/ 1kb) for data if you're not on a data plan.

sounds good, so long as blocking edge and 3g doesnt take away my ability to text message im happy ![]()
im planning on picking one up tomorrow now, and im assuming all the tutorials i need are in the tutorials forum so i think im good.
Thanks alot for the help, it was really useful ![]()

OH i thought of one more question.
Do iTrips work on iphone?
Or does the iphone have an FM transmitter?
Cause listening to my music on my phone through my car speakers while charging
would kick an amazing amount of ass
Offline
From what I've been reading from google...you can but you won't be able to use the phone, some static, and some other bugs.
Not sure, try it out anyways.
Offline
alright so i just may have to return it if i try out
not a big deal
Thanks again, and by tonight i should have my iphone ![]()
