Confirmed. It works. I'm back in business.
The only thing I'm going to miss is the bluetooth headset battery indicator.
Here's what I did:
1. Plug iPhone in and sync iPhone, then close iTunes
2. Hold the Home button and power button until the screen goes black (around 8 seconds for me), release the power button but keep holding the home button.
3. iTunes will reopen when it detects the iPhone in recovery mode.
4. Holding ALT (on Mac, dunno in Windows) click Restore and choose the 1.0.2 firmware in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone updates
5. It will restore, and throw an error message when it's done. Unplug your iPhone and close iTunes.
6. Download AppTapp 3.1 installer and run it, plug your iPhone in. It will not work, but it will take the iPhone out of recovery mode.
7. Open iTunes and sync your phone from the backup created in step 1.
Some notes:
The reports of wifi not working are wrong, mine works fine.
When I go to Settings -> General -> About it says my modem firmware is 04.01.13_G and that my "Version" is 1.0.2 (1C28)
This works, believe it. I did it, you can to.

I just bought a brand new iPhone today, and wanted to unlock it without activating it. However, everytime I try to set the phone in restore mode, I do not get the Yellow Triangle screen, instead I get the iTune Logo with the USB cable. So, I figured this new unit has the 1.1.1 firmware already installed from factory and thus has the new iTune logo indicating the restore mode. So, I continued by downgrading the firmaware to 1.0.2. using the steps mentionned above.
Once my iPhone is in Restore mode, here what I encountered:
If I use iTune 4.3.2, after selecting the 1.0.2 firmare for restore, I get the following message as the beginning of the firmware install: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)". So back to the next method by using the iTunes 7.3.0.54.
Now, if I use iTunes 7.3.0.54, I set the iPhone again in restore mode, and launch iTune, as before I will get the message of "must restore", thus I proceed with selecting the restore button without explicitly selecting the 1.0.2 firmware since this version of iTune used the 1.02 as its default. Next, the iTune continues downloading the 1.02 firmware into the iPhone, which will take about 4 - 5 minutes, unfortunately, one the download in complete, I get the following errror message:
"There was an error downloading the iPhone software for the iPhone "iPhone". An unckown error occurred: (-48)". So as per the instuctions, I ignore this message and proceed with iBrickr to free the phone....
By the Way, Is there a way to find out what the version of the firmware is before unlocking the phone.
I run iBrickr, Free the Phone, then reset it into the Restore Mode, and proceed with the next step of iBrickr, the one that should take between 3 - 4 minutes and up to 10 minutes, the restore screen turns green and nothing happens... even after 20 minues....
Sooo, I turn off the phone and restart it, and it comes back into the activation screen.

THANKS...
