With the launch of iPad pre-orders in the states, Apple also released additional details about the device and associated services. While 3G-capable models of the iPad will not be available until late April, Apple has provided an overview of how customers will sign up for and manage their 3G data service on the device.

Customers can choose from either of two contract-free data plans in the U.S. through AT&T: $14.99 per month for 250 MB or $29.99 for unlimited data. Customers can sign up for service directly on the iPad and can cancel or re-enroll at any time.

So if you have a business trip or vacation approaching, just sign up for the month you’ll be traveling and cancel when you get back. You don’t need to visit a store to get 3G service. You can sign up, check your data usage, manage your account, or cancel your service — all from your iPad.

Data service is activated on the iPad through its Settings application, offering a simple screen allowing the user to select a plan and a credit card payment method.

Once access is activated, the application offers a clear overview of the customer’s service details, including active dates of service and amount of data used and amount/time remaining for customers on the 250 MB plan. Apple also notes that customers on the 250 MB plan will received three alerts (20%, 10%, and 0% remaining) to keep them apprised of their remaining data limits.

Users can also easily manage their service through the Settings application, allowing them to change plans or cancel service automatically at the end of any billing period. Users on the 250 MB service plan can also select to automatically boost their plan to unlimited service once they reach their limit.

AT&T’s 3G service plans for the iPad also provide users with access to over 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. And all iPad models support 802.11n Wi-Fi for optimum performance.

Well, the day we all — most of us — pre-ordered the iPad is almost coming to an end. So, how many of you pre-ordered an iPad? If you pre-ordered one, we’d love to hear which model you ended up pre-ordering.

If you’re still holding off, we’d also like to know why and which model you’re planning on getting if any.

Personally, I believe the most successful iPad will be the low-end WiFi-Only 16GB and the WiFi+3G 16GB, what do you guys think?

Time to play the waiting game for it to release and wait for iPad Dev Team to emerge and come up with the first iPad Hack or iPad jailbreak.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Apple just aired their first iPad commercial during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

Description of the ad:

The commercial was just on, depicted a person using the iPad on their lap, going through the various features (iBooks, Pages, Videos, etc. nothing new) with an upbeat song.

If you would like to view a high quality version of the ad, head over to apple.com or the source link below.

The giant iPho– I mean, the iPad will be launching on April 3rd. Isn’t it exciting? Of course many of you are probably mad at Apple as there is no multitasking, just like the iPod Touch and iPhone. As well — no Flash. That’s a huge bummer. But there is always Gordon — the Javascript hack that enables flash on iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

So, iPad launching April 3rd — pre-orders, anyone? Starting March 12th, Apple will be accepting pre-orders for the iPad from their online store, or reserve it for pick up at your local Apple retail outlet.

Wi-Fi version of the iPad will be priced as follows:

  • $499 for 16GB
  • $599 for 32GB
  • $699 for 64GB

Wi-Fi + 3G version of the iPad:

  • $629 for 16GB
  • $729 for 32GB
  • $829 for 64GB

Significant increase in price just for 3G. Sad I know, but that’s just Apple’s ways.

Stay tuned!

Apple announced that the iPad would go on sale at the end of March, however, we’ve yet to hear official details about the actual sale date and procedure.

There’s whispers in the air that Apple is planning on launching the iPad at retail stores on Friday, March 26th at 6 p.m. in similar fashion to the original iPhone launch.

The Examiner now makes similar claims of a March 26th launch date with Apple store employees getting training on the device starting on March 10th. The author also claims that the commercials will begin airing on March 15th. Finally, those who camp out for the iPad will receive a “special gift”.

The 3G enabled version of the iPad will follow the Wi-Fi iPad launch by about 30 days, according to Apple.

Computerworld is reporting that Apple is looking to bring iPhone OS to new devices beyond iPhone, iPod Touch and recently launched iPad based on a Apple Job listing posted last week.

Apple is looking for “Engineering Manager (Platform Bring-Up)” and as per the job listing, requires the employee to lead a team of engineers working with hardware and “custom silicon” teams to bring-up new platforms and prototypes.

The Core Platform team within Apple’s Core OS organization is looking for a talented and inspired manager to lead a team focused on bring-up of iPhone OS on new platforms. The team is responsible for low level platform architecture, firmware, core drivers and bring-up of new hardware platforms. The team consists of talented engineers with experience in hardware, firmware, IOKit drivers, security and platform architecture.

Computerworld speculates that Apple could bring the iPhone OS to devices like Apple TV, enterprise-class Time Capsule micro-server offerings and others.

Two years down the road, other low ends of the Apple Mac line might get eaten up by the Apple processor/iPhone OS. Mac Mini and Mac Book, I am looking directly at you. Once there is an iPhone OS running the TV and the MacBook Air segments, it isn’t a great leap to expect to see it in low end Macs.

It does make sense for Apple to take advantage of iPhone OS and bring it to devices like AppleTV. I like the idea of being able to play iPhone games or use some of the 150,000 or more iPhone apps onto a beautiful 60-inch HDTV.

MediaMemo reports that our beloved video site, Hulu, may be making it’s way somehow to the iPad but instead of being a free service like it currently is, it will be a paid service.

Hulu and its owners — three of the big broadcast TV networks — want to bring some version of the Web video service to Apple’s device.

But the most likely scenario is one where access to Hulu on the iPad comes as part of a subscription package, multiple people familiar with the company tell me.

While in the past Hulu has noted it has been looking for a way to bring paid content to the market, this report indicates that company executives may be thinking that the best way to achieve that goal while preserving the free experience for computer-based users is to charge for mobile-based content such as that which would appear on the iPad.

And while you could argue that the iPad isn’t necessarily a mobile device, since 3G Internet access is an optional feature, Hulu and its owners are likely to classify it as one. Like many other content owners, the video service sees the device as an opportunity to charge for something it has been giving away for free on the Web.

Leaving aside the problem Hulu faces from with its current video player being Flash-based and Apple’s mobile devices not supporting the standard, the company would also need to secure mobile rights from content providers before being able to offer such a service to the iPad and other mobile platforms.

Finally, the report concludes that Hulu for the iPad is unlikely to launch alongside the device itself next month, but users can probably expect in some form, likely paid, in the future.

Great news! Apple has increased the download cap on iPhone’s AppStore and iTunes Store. It used to be 10MB but has been increased the limit to 20MB – What does this mean? It means those applications you’ve tried to download on-the-go only to find out you cannot because of the 10MB download cap, now, you can as long as the application is under 20MB.

iPhone Download Cap Limit

The download cap only affects users when using AT&T’s EDGE or 3G network, it does not affect users using Wi-Fi.

Wow, a day after the iPhone Dev Team released their updated Redsn0w software, Apple releases an update to iPhone OS. This isn’t a significant update to the iPhone OS. It doesn’t introduce new and exciting features to the current hardware but it does fix a number of issues and bugs.

Apple iPhone OS 3.1.3 Update

This update fixes and improves the following:

  • Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
  • Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances
  • Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

This update is for all current hardware, iPhone 1G (EDGE), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and all iPod Touch devices. You can easily get the update via iTunes by connecting your device and clicking “Check for Update”

*Note* It’s been confirmed by the iPhone Dev Team that Redsn0w 0.9.2 works with this new iPhone OS update only with iPhone 1G (EDGE) and iPhone 3G and *ONLY* if you don’t care about unlocking. Just point Redsn0w 0.9.2 to the iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware IPSW — The iPhone Dev Team urges iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch users who wish to jailbreak to stay away from this update until further notice!
