With the launch of iPad pre-orders in the states, Apple also released additional details about the device and associated services. While 3G-capable models of the iPad will not be available until late April, Apple has provided an overview of how customers will sign up for and manage their 3G data service on the device.

Customers can choose from either of two contract-free data plans in the U.S. through AT&T: $14.99 per month for 250 MB or $29.99 for unlimited data. Customers can sign up for service directly on the iPad and can cancel or re-enroll at any time.

So if you have a business trip or vacation approaching, just sign up for the month you’ll be traveling and cancel when you get back. You don’t need to visit a store to get 3G service. You can sign up, check your data usage, manage your account, or cancel your service — all from your iPad.

Data service is activated on the iPad through its Settings application, offering a simple screen allowing the user to select a plan and a credit card payment method.

Once access is activated, the application offers a clear overview of the customer’s service details, including active dates of service and amount of data used and amount/time remaining for customers on the 250 MB plan. Apple also notes that customers on the 250 MB plan will received three alerts (20%, 10%, and 0% remaining) to keep them apprised of their remaining data limits.

Users can also easily manage their service through the Settings application, allowing them to change plans or cancel service automatically at the end of any billing period. Users on the 250 MB service plan can also select to automatically boost their plan to unlimited service once they reach their limit.

AT&T’s 3G service plans for the iPad also provide users with access to over 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. And all iPad models support 802.11n Wi-Fi for optimum performance.

AT&T has announced they will be allowing VoIP applications to operate on their mobile network. So that means, you will be able to use Skype and other VoIP applications on your iPhone via the mobile network (EDGE, 3G). Previously, VoIP was not allowing on the mobile network, only WiFi – However, you could easily bypass that by using a Cydia application called VoIPover3G or 3G Unrestrictor.

AT&T today announced it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. For some time, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enable VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi networks. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision.

The announcement covers traditional VoIP services but does not mention anything about the Google Voice issue, which is not strictly a VoIP service though it does offer VoIP-like services. Now if AT&T can get more bandwidth in iPhone-rich cities such as San Fransisco, CA so a few hundred people in one specific area using iPhones don’t bring the service down to it’s knees, it would be awesome!

I apologize for the late news, but the carrier update from AT&T to enable iPhone MMS for customers on the AT&T network. Unfortunately, due to ‘hardware limitations’ this carrier update is only available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users.

To update:

  1. Open iTunes
  2. Connect your iPhone
  3. If you’re not notified automatically, click on Check for Updates
  4. Download and Install the update
  5. Wait till iTunes confirms successful installation
  6. Enjoy MMS

If your iPhone is jailbroken, it’s ok to to install the Carrier Update according to many reports.

It’s about time! AT&T has announced in a press release that MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) will be finally coming to the iPhone on September 25 2009 for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS customers, on the AT&T Network of course. Sadly, no iPhone 2G (First Generation) MMS support due to hardware limitations.

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

Many iPhone customers on the AT&T network have been waiting for AT&T for the past four months since Apple announced it back in June 09. The MMS service will not be an extra paid service, it will be free to existing iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS customers with text messaging. So, in other words, everyone with an iPhone on AT&T (except iPhone 2G owners) will have MMS for free.

If you’re tired of waiting for AT&T to bring internet tethering on the iPhone then your wait is over. It’s a pretty shady process to install the carrier profile to enable Internet Tethering but it works! I can confirm it works on iPhone 3G with 3.0.1 firmware. Screenshots below.

To Install:

  1. Open Cydia and search for Internet Tethering and it should be the only option
  2. Install Internet Tethering
  3. Once Internet Tethering is installed, you will see a new icon in your homescreen, open it and read it carefully.
  4. Go to the displayed URL on the app on your iPhone (If you click on it, it wont work. Copy/Paste it onto Safari)
  5. Once you’re at the site, scroll down till you get to Mobileconfigs, tap on it
  6. Search for your country, select your carrier and click install (If you have a passcode on your phone, it will ask you to input your passcode)
  7. Once you input your passcode (if you have one) then the config will be installed, and Internet tethering on your iPhone should be enabled

Warning: you may be charged extra by your carrier doing this. Use strictly at your own risk!

The folks over at macrumors.com are reporting that Apple and AT&T have begun updating order statuses and providing UPS tracking numbers to the customers for their iPhone 3G S orders. If ordered from Apple, shipments are being sent from Shenzhen, China and are due for delivery on Friday, the official launch date for the iPhone 3G S. If ordered from AT&T, the order status appears as “in progress” and have been assigned tracking numbers, however, the shipments do not appear to have yet been picked up by UPS.

Visible signs of AT&T’s and Apple’s preparations for the launch of the new iPhone, as well as the corresponding release of iPhone OS 3.0 for older devices this Wednesday, have begun appearing in the days leading up to the new releases. Over the weekend, AT&T also sold out of its initial iPhone 3G S pre-order allotment, meaning that those who wish to obtain an iPhone 3G S from AT&T on launch day will have to do so in-person at an AT&T retail store.

BoyGeniusReport claims that the initial batch of iPhone 3G S shipments have already been allocated to pre-orders, so if you haven’t ordered yet, you will have to wait, sadly.

To make a long story short, if you did not pre-order an iPhone 3G S from AT&T yet, (we’re not talking about Apple because we don’t have information on their pre-ordering/stock levels, etc) your iPhone 3G S won’t be shipping to you/your store until 7-14 days after the order date. It seems that all AT&T’s pre-order stock is depleted leaving only iPhone 3G Ss for dying-in-line purchasing on this coming Friday, and all pre-orders going forward won’t be fulfilled until after the June 19th launch date.

There’s a high chance that the Apple stores will have a larger inventory of iPhone 3G S’s on launch day, as they did on the iPhone 3G’s launch day.

Today, AT&T announced its plans to deploy a HSPA 7.2 3G wireless network, topping out at 7.2mbps it’s faster than internet from a typical household. AT&T plans to start rolling out the improvements later this year and will take till 2011 to full deploy the necessary equipment for this new network. Trials are scheduled for 2010 with deployment to begin in 2011.

The upgrade to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is part of AT&T’s plan for continued investments to deliver the nation’s best mobile broadband experience – the ideal combination of speed, coverage and best device line-up. AT&T today has the nation’s fastest 3G network and has attracted more than twice the number of smartphone users than any other competitor.

With its network built on the 3G UMTS technology that is commonly deployed throughout the world, AT&T can boost the speed of its mobile broadband network and offer a wide variety of devices to take advantage of it well in advance of 2011-2012, when most industry observers expect 4G LTE networks and device availability to scale. AT&T plans to begin LTE trials in 2010, with deployment beginning in 2011.

Along with the move to HSPA, AT&T announced a series of initiatives that it is planning to undertake this year

  • Near-Doubling Radio Frequency Capacity. In 2008 and 2009 to date, high-quality 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed in more than half of AT&T’s 3G network footprint to improve overall coverage and in-building reception, with additional markets planned for later in the year.
  • More Bandwidth to Cell Sites. We are adding fiber-optic connectivity and additional capacity to thousands of cell sites across the country this year, expanding the critical connections that deliver traffic from a cell site into the global IP backbone network. These upgrades will support the higher mobile broadband speeds enabled by both HSPA 7.2 and LTE.
  • More Cell Sites. Deployment of about 2,100 new cell sites across the country.
  • Wi-Fi Integration. Many AT&T smartphones will be able to switch seamlessly between 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. AT&T customers with qualifying smartphone and 3G LaptopConnect plans have access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network and more than 20,000 hotspots, including locations in all 50 states at no additional charge. AT&T’s global Wi-Fi footprint covers more than 90,000 hotspots, and AT&T also can create permanent or temporary extended Wi-Fi zones in areas with high 3G network use, like a grouping of hotels or a festival.
  • MicroCells. Customer trials leading toward general availability of AT&T 3G MicroCell offerings, which utilize femtocells to enhance in-building wireless coverage.

Perhaps the upcoming iPhone will support this new network!

Ralph de la Vega, AT&T CEO, has confirmed reported that the company is considering a cheaper monthly data plan option for the iPhone. Considering 90% of the US population is having financial difficulties, this would be a good option — Assuming of course that you absolutely don’t need the unlimited data.

The executive said it would be costly for AT&T to cut the price of its unlimited Web surfing service. The minimum plan for iPhone users is $70 a month, which includes unlimited Web surfing and a certain amount of voice calls.

Of course, the cheaper data plan will have limitations on the amount of data that can be transferred monthly. The current iPhone Data Plan is unlimited for a $30/month fee. While such a move may make sense for the price conscious consumer, much of the iPhone’s success as a mobile net device seems directly related to the unlimited nature of its data plan.

De la Vega also dismissed the possibility of an iPhone with no data plan as AT&T makes the bulk of its income from selling these add-on services.
