Apple has fixed DFU Mode and enabled iPhone notes syncing in the just released Mac OS X 10.5.7, according to an iSpazio report.

With the new Mac OS 10.5.7 DFU mode session are fully functional, which is certainly a good thing! We can also synchronize notes between the iPhone 3.0 and iTunes 8.2 via USB. Take a Look at a screenshot by Mark Sfreddo that shows the ability to synchronize notes in iTunes.

This is great news to everyone out there having trouble using DFU mode. For some reason I never had any. Thank God. Anyway, this will surely help everyone out.

Update #2: The 3G unlock video is live

Direct link to yellowsn0w demo on Qik

Update: Sometime before Christmas, iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd will demonstrate the unlock along with some other pwnage stuff. The demo will be streamed via Qik and it’ll be announced via MuscleNerd’s Twitter account just before the broadcast goes live.

We’ll keep you updated!

Today, iPhone Dev Team announced their iPhone 3G unlock, codenamed “yellowsn0w.” It’s completed and being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity of Quickpwn. Yeah, you heard right. The dev team is targeting for a release date in New Year’s Eve 2008. This unlock is available to iPhone 3Gs with the 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, You were warned not to update. Your iPhone 3G will also require to be jailbroken.

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

In addition, Apple pushed an update to Mac OS X users, 10.5.6. Lots of users who updated have been having trouble with DFU mode. iPhone Dev Team believes Apple didn’t do it on purpose but a bug in the kernel, is causing the problems.

Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.

We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -

  1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)
  2. /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

  3. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.
  4. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

Stay tuned for New Year’s Eve!!

If you recently upgraded your Mac OS X system to 10.5.6 (released December 15th ‘08) and you’ve tried to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch and found it doesn’t quite work, well it’s because 10.5.6 disables DFU mode. DFU mode is required to jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s unclear if Apple did this intentionally or if it’s a bug in the kernel.

Over at hackint0sh.org, volkspost has put together a nice automator application that does all the required steps to re-enable DFU on Mac OS X 10.5.6. You are required to be logged in as an administrator and you must provide the admin password.

The application, when ran

  • checks if you are at Mac OS X 10.5.6 or better (if not will quit)
  • show a readme
  • quits all running apps (with save option)
  • backup the original files (AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.6) in a new folder on your Desktop
  • asks for your admin password
  • copy AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.5 into the desired location on your Mac
  • set owner:group and permissions
  • rebuild the kextcache
  • reboot your Mac

Download the automator application from our iPhone Downloads section here.

  1. Unzip the archive
  2. Place the “Install_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_5″ folder on your Desktop (This is important)
  3. Open the folder and start the application “Fix_DFU_10_5_6″
  4. You will see the Readme box (click “OK”)
  5. provide your admin password
  6. Let the Application do it’s job

  7. At the end the Finder will open another dialog box telling you that the cache is being rebuild, Click “OK” or just leave the box alone. After a couple of seconds your Mac will reboot automatically – done, DFU is enabled again.
