Apple released iTunes 8.2 via Software Update on Mac OS X and Windows. The update adds support for iPhone OS 3.0, which is expected to be featured at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week.

iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update. iTunes 8.2 also includes many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.

Registered iPhone developers have been using pre-release versions of iTunes 8.2 since late April in order to test iPhone OS 3.0 betas. If you did previously install an iTunes 8.2 pre-release version, this new update won’t appear in Software Update.

In Addition, for those who care, Quicktime was also updated to 7.6.2. This update fixes security issues and improves performance.

Blue Screen Of Death BSOD

Many Microsoft Windows Vista users for both 32 and 64 bit versions have been experiencing problems with Apple’s new iTunes 8. What kind of problems? The worst kind, the infamous windows blue screen of death! In response to this Apple has quietly swapped the Windows version on their servers with a new iTunes 8 download file that should fix these bugs. They have also published a few workarounds that may help those still being affected.

If you were one of those who downloaded iTunes 8 right away and are having problems, try uninstalling it then downloading it again from Apple to reinstall. If that fails to work try these solutions from Apple’s Technical documents:

Solution 1:

* Disconnect your iPhone or iPod from Windows Vista.
* Uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support
* For Classic View
* Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
* First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
* Select iTunes, click Uninstall.
* For Control Panel Home View
* Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
* First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
* Select iTunes and click Uninstall.
* Restart the computer.
* Re-download and install the updated iTunes 8 installer from www.apple.com/itunes/download.

Important: Do not use the iTunes8Setup or iTunes864Setup file you previously downloaded. The reason for this note is Apple wants users to download the re-release version of iTunes 8.

The game of cat and mouse between Apple and The iPhone Dev Team continues. If you have tried to use the latest iTunes 8 to unlock or jailbreak your iPhone or iPhone 3G you may have noticed this new error message when attempting to restore:

The iPhone Dev Team has always boasted that the current hacks they use to achieve a jailbreak cannot be solved unless Apple makes a hardware change. This is still true Apple has not closed the hole in the hardware that allows a jailbreak but instead is trying to detect the hack in the ipsw file before it reaches the device.

From the Dev Team:

one way they can try to combat Pwnage for existing hardware is to program iTunes to detect and prevent the Pwnage exploit.  In fact, they’ve already done that in iTunes 8.

If you need to downgrade back to iTunes 7.7.1 to complete a jailbreak or unlock you can find them in our iPhone Downloads section or use these direct links:

Download iTunes 7.7.1 Windows
Download iTunes 7.7.1 Mac OSX

Luckily the Dev Team was already anticipating this move and are prepared. (more…)

iTunes 8 is now available for download from Apple. Apple iTunes Download Page.

What’s New:

Genius Playlists
Meet Genius: a brilliant way to create perfect playlists. Play a song, click the Genius button, and iTunes creates a playlist of other songs from your library that go great together. Genius playlists help you discover songs in your library you never knew you had — and rediscover forgotten favorites.

Genius Sidebar
While you reacquaint yourself with the music you already own, let Genius introduce you to new music you’ll love. As you select songs in your library, the Genius sidebar displays songs from the iTunes Store that go great with it. The Genius sidebar won’t recommend songs already in your library, and you can preview and buy recommended songs directly from the sidebar.

You may already know if you’ve launched iTunes recently, that Apple has released a new iPhone System Software Update 2.0.1. This update is just a bug fix patch and gives no new features. Always when a brand new update is released, if you are using an unlocked or jailbroken iPhone it is recommended that you ignore the update until different dev groups have time to update their tools.

We’ve been getting quite a bit of mail about this lately, most of you probably didn’t jump the gun and install iTunes 7.7 but some of you did.

So you didn’t listen to our warnings about upgrading your lowly 2G/EDGE iPhone to v2.0 firmware and installing iTunes 7.7, now your phone is relocked and you have a really expensive iPod touch because you can’t make any phone calls.

Well everything you require to get your phone back is already available right here from our iPhone downloads section. Here is what you need:

First you’ll need to uninstall iTunes 7.7 then install iTunes 7.6.2 which we have for you here: Windows / Mac

You shouldn’t need to download it serpately but here is our link to iPhone Firmware v1.1.4

All you need to do is use iTunes to perform a full recovery and it will nicely downgrade your iPhone for you. Just turn off the phone plug it into your computer then press and hold both the power and home buttons for 10 sec, it will beep you can let go of the power but keep holding the home button down until iTunes has discovered the phone in restore mode.

Update: if you are having problems with a newer iPhone you may need to downgrade the baseband firmware. You can use a modded version of ZiPhone by kIREmk to achieve this available here: Windows / Mac
