Comments (17)Update: Well the mystery was revealed and it wasn’t with the release of PwnageTool. ‘It is sparkling!’ refers to PwnageTool 2.0.2 being uploaded to the Sparkle Update server. However right before launch a show stopping bug was found. The Dev team has finished working for today and will resume squashing this bug after some well deserved sleep.
They are at it again with their latest message posted this afternoon ‘It is sparkling!’. What is sparkling? Is it the new PwnageTool 2.0.2 with Installer 4.0 that we are all waiting for? Is it the champaign in their glasses? I’m sure all will be revealed to us soon enough.
The Dev Team has a history of leaving quirky little riddles in the build up to their releases here are some of their past messages with explanations from the author:
Comments (1)Also some people have asked about the cryptic posts that we made during the run up to the release of PwnageTool 2.0, here are the explanations.
Two heavy hitter iPhone hacking tools are due out very soon. iPhone Dev Team’s latest point release of PwnageTool 2.0.2 was held off today, due to RipDev’s news that he is releasing the official beta version of Installer 4.0. Installer 4.0 Beta will now be included in PwnageTool 2.0.2. You may recall Installer 4.0 Beta leaked earlier this week. It will be interesting to see the differences between the leaked beta and the official beta versions. The Dev Team has always made sure never to give an exact release date, insuring they don’t feel pressure to release something before it’s ready and in special cases like this, when major functionality can be added last second. They have however promised it will be very soon!
We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.
…Please don’t wait up for us, PwnageTool 2.0.1 with shiny new stuff is coming very soon.
As always as soon as PwnageTool 2.0.2 and Installer 4.0 Beta are released we will have them for download in our iPhone Downloads section and will be able to discuss any issues in our iPhone Forums
Comments (3)The future looks bright for unlocking and jailbreaking the upcoming iPhone v2.1 firmware for EDGE iPhone users, and jailbreakable for 3G users (the 3G unlock is still being worked on see more…). In the iPhone Dev Team’s latest update they have detailed their success with Pwning iPhone 2.1 beta firmwares
Comments (0)DevTeam members have an internal beta version of Installer 4 from RiPDev. It looks very nice, and expect a release from them soon. We don’t have an exact date yet, but we’d estimate certainly not within the next few days and less than a couple of weeks. We’ve attached another couple of screenshots at the end in case you want to see more.
We are also testing an internal build of PwnageTool for iPhone OS 2.1b2 (for first generation iPhones and also 3G models). Unlock and jailbreak is working fine on the 1st Gen (we don’t think Apple is even trying anymore to prevent pwnage or unlocks for 1st Gen iPhones). For 3G, jailbreak certainly still works, and this will be released in good time.
This guide is for how to upgrade a 1.1.4 or previous 1st generation EDGE iPhone NOT 3G to the iPhone 2.0 firmware using PwnageTool 2.0.1 by the iPhone Dev Team.
Comments (21)It didn’t take long for PwnageTool 2.0 to become YouTube’s star of the day with all kind of videos being released of people hacking their EDGE iPhone 2.0’s and iPhone 3G. Here is the most popular of the videos so far:
Comments (2)There have been many reports of errors abound for the iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 2.0. Jailbreaking and Unlocking EDGE iPhones running 2.0 seems to be working quite well for most, but jailbreaking the iPhone 3G seems to be the largest cause of complaints.
Some report the application not even launching properly but most are having problems with either iTunes installing the new firmware or PwnageTool’s creation of the firmware file. The team has been making updates to their blog. We will make sure to keep you up to date with what is going on. Hopefully these problems will get sorted out quickly.
Comments (7)It’s been released early! The iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 2.0 is out! We’ve got it in our iPhone Downloads section under iPhone Utilities or simply click here to download it.
We are testing it out on both the iPhone EDGE & iPhone 3G and will have a full review our Pwning fun soon.
Files you may need to go with PwnageTool 2.0:
iPhone Firmware 2.0 for EDGE
iPhone Firmware 2.0 for 3G
iPhone BootLoaders 3.9 & 4.6
Don’t have a Mac? If you are using an iPhone EDGE with Windows you can try using iTunes to install the PwnageTool 2.0 custom firmware I created.

Comments (23)We’ll be releasing a more official announcement soon, but we wanted to get the tool out there. We sincerely hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it :)
Update: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.
Update: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes, try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.
Update: If DFU restores are giving you trouble, another route to pwned 2.0 for 1G owners is to use our first pwnage at 1.1.4. Once you are pwned there, you can do a normal recovery-mode restore to your custom 2.0 ipsw. BTW the iPhone does *not* need to be pre-pwned to be able to DFU-restore into a pwned ipsw — it needs to be pre-pwned only for normal recovery-mode restores of custom ipsw’s.
Update: Mail application not working at 2.0? Please restore to your custom ipsw (you don’t need to DFU restore if you are pwned, normal restore will work now too) but then select “Set up as a new iPhone” when iTunes asks. Your first sync will bring back all of your settings anyway.
Well the iPhone Dev Team has left another clue as to the release date of PwnageTool 2.0. This one is pretty easy to understand though:
We love Sundays. We think you will too.
Looks like we can expect to download PwnageTool 2.0 tomorrow Sunday July 20th.
Comments (2)The iPhone Dev Team has released information in regards to which iPhone and iPod devices will work with the certain features of the upcoming PwnageTool 2.0. Unfortunately unlocking the iPhone 3G will not be supported in the first release. This functionality will be released in a future update.
Comments (8)So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-
iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).
We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.
