Update: Browse to http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com on your iPhone 1.1.1 or iPod Touch and it will crash Safari… Only leaving you with full read+write access to the device’s file system! Don’t jump the gun though, I’d only recommend doing this if you have a good understanding of how all this stuff works. Niacin states a full tutorial and breakdown of the TIFF exploit will be available in the next day or so. Apple will more than likely patch said vulnerability in a future software update.
Still not available to the public; however, iPhone hackers Niacin & Dre have managed to combine the symlink hack with a newly discovered TIFF vulnerability found in Mobile Safari. When put into practice you’ll be granted full read+write access to the iPhone’s file system, and the iPod Touch for that matter. Engadget has confirmed this method to work, but there are a couple caveats…
- Thus far the hack isn’t entirely without issues. We’re still trying to determine exactly what’s what, but we’ve lost read and write access unexpectedly. This may or may not be a problem with our machine or device, though, and not necessarily the hack.
- We did not test this method on an iPhone, but technically there should be no difference in the effect. Side note: your v1.1.1 iPhone would, at this time, need to be activated to load the TIFF. (How else are you gonna load it?) This is supposedly being worked on.
Rest assure, once the kinks are worked out, we’ll have an easy do-it-yourself method to jailbreak any 1.1.1 iPhone. In the meantime, you know what to do, and it’s certainly not upgrading.

Exactly as the title suggests… iFlash — add an external flash to the iPhone!

I was terribly saddened when I first picked up an iPhone and started snapping some pics; realization of a lacking camera flash soon set in. Turning my frown upside down is Joe, who came up with this clever yet simple hardware hack. Joe has written a tutorial detailing the steps on how to add your own external flash to the iPhone. It’s actually quite simple.
Despite taking place in late September; it’s definitely deserving of a spot here on iPhone Hacks. After all, it is a pretty dope hack.
Requirements:
The iPhone has been unlocked several different ways now, and after much teasing from fellow admin Greg I made the drive to Walden Galleria in Buffalo to pickup my very own Apple iPhone. Obviously the first thing I tried when I got it home was using DVD Jon’s iPhone activation server. Much to my dismay I had updated my iTunes and was running v7.3.2.6 the offsets used in the hack require v7.3.0.54. So after doing much hunting around I managed to get a copy of v.7.3.0.54, downgrade iTunes and finally implement the hack using The iPhone Unlocking Toolkit from pqdvd.net.
After activating the iPhone I created an iPhone activation tutorial for windows users documenting my hurdles.
Required software for this guide:
iPhone Unlocking Toolkit
iTunes v7.3.0.54
Say whaaaaat? You know it! *kicks a cart*
Using a Turbo-SIM from these guys, without any additional hardware, a SIM card reader/writer for instance, you can unlock your iPhone — any carrier — phone, SMS, GPRS, all functional on any GSM network. I just ordered my Turbo-SIM so I cannot personally confirm this method to work, yet. Although, word circulating the virtual streets say it’s good to go.
Software you need:
First, your phone must be activated (with the AT&T SIM), jailbreaked, and with SSH and vim. Refer to previous tutorials to do that
- Download the port of Bladox utilities on your computer, extract it on your computer (you need the binary file turbo-app)
- Download AppleSaft 0.92 from Bladox, extract it on your computer (you need the .trb file)
- Turn on your phone with Turbo SIM + AT&T subscription
- Disable CommCenter - ssh to your phone, vim /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
com.apple.CommCenter.plist addCode:
<key>Disabled</key> <true/>
for example add it just after these lines, already present in the file
Code:
<key>OnDemand</key> <false/>
If you don’t like vim, you can do this modification on your desktop computer (iPhuc/iPhoneInterface getfile, modify the file, and putfile)
vim ultra light survival kit
i : insert mode
ESC : command mode (from insert mode)
dd : delete the current line (in command mode)
:w! : save (in command mode)
:q! : quit (in command mode)- Reboot
- Copy turbo-app to your phone (for example in /opt/bladox)
- Copy applesaft.trb to your phone (for example in /tmp)
- ssh to your phone, set the executable permission to turbo-app (chmod a+x /opt/bladox/turbo-app) and run it with /opt/bladox/turbo-app /tmp/applesaft.trb. It should take approximately 30 seconds and you shouldn’t see any error. Please panic if you see one
- Reenable CommCenter - ssh to your phone, vim /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
com.apple.CommCenter.plist and delete the lines you added previously
- Reboot
- Go into Settings/Phone/SIM Applications/Apple Saft and choose Set
- Turn off your phone
- Turn on your phone with Turbo SIM + your subscription and test
Check back for a full report (and cleaner tutorial) once my Turbo-SIM arrives. Mad props to everyone responsible for achieving this unlock!

Two tutorials, for both Mac OS X and Windows, are now available detailing the steps to add custom ring tones on your iPhone. Both set of instructions are somewhat tedious; read carefully, use with caution, and within little time you’ll be the coolest ever — answering your iPhone in style!
All requirements are available in our downloads area.
